We purchased 12 Envy 17 (model 17-1011NR) from Newegg and have been suffering from Blue Screens and Freezes.
After evaluating the windows dump files, it seems that the USB hub is the root of the problem.
Sometimes the machines blue screen, lock completely and sometimes the mouse just hangs which requires a reboot to solve.
* The base image that was provided by HP experiences the same problem.
* After updating all drivers to latest versions it still have the same results.
* Reinstalling an OS (not using their OEM install) has the same results.
* We have tried 6 different styles of mice from different manufacters and have tried all USB ports including the USB 3.0 port and the ESATA port.
* We have also tried a variation and installed only drivers from Windows Update which leaves a couple drivers unkown.. but we did that for the sake of trying everything and still the same results.
* We have used the HP 3.0 Diagnostic tools on numerous machine to rule out bad memory and other devices.
* The machines usually have this problem when under LOW to MEDIUM load. I'm not sure we have seen any that have had issues durring high / extreme load so we can rule out overheating.
* We have also modified different power settings to avoid any power saving issues which may be turning on / off ports etc.
* We have tried the last 2 versions of bios and have the same results.
The files that appear in the dump files are usbehci.sys,usbport.sys, and usbhub.sys...
Were a software development company and are pretty knowledgeable when it comes to this sort of thing. This has been an interesting issues because we have 12 computers all having similar issues and we have done about every combination of operating system and device driver installs possible.
I know there have been some serious issues with the Envy 15 but not seeing too many people having troubles with the Envy 17. So, I don't know if it is possible that we could got 12 bad computers or there is a serious problem with these laptops. I'm waiting for some additional feedback from HP support and wanted to post here in the meantime.
Its a shame, the computer is nice and the screen clarity is beautiful. At the moment, I would suggest anyone by them after what we are going through. I've got developers trying to use these and we have lot good amounts of code.
Thanks,
Tim

what would you need twelve for?

Thanks for sharing.
Good luck and keep us posted! -
Were a software development company and I bought these for all the developers and graphic designers. In addition, many of us are addicted to Startcraft and these come in very handy!
A HP staff memeber has been communicating on the HP forums. Hopefully it goes somewhere.
If anyone else is experiencing similar issues, please post it here. It will make it much easier for all of us to get it resolved. -
When I first got my Hp Envy 17 it was lagging so badly. I recommend that you do a clean install on one of the machines and compare how it does to the stock installation.
-
We have installed OS's and drivers every imaginable way and always have the same results.
When we got the machines, we didn't even use the OS's that came with the machine and installed Windows 7 Professional with Intel SSD's 160gb... We put some machines back to stock to see if the issues existed there as well.
Right now were playing with some power settings to see if that helps. I'm sending over some dump files this evening to HP which show the USB drivers having issues. Hopefully we can get some results.
Thanks,

Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
I can only imagine two possible sources of this problem:
A) HP shipped Newegg a bad batch - either knowingly or unknowingly, and all of your units have an identical hardware flaw resulting from an error in the manufacturing process.
or
B) There's something on your end causing the problem. Is there any common factor between your different tests, aside from them occurring on the same-model computers? For example, is there a program that your employees all run (such as some coding environment or virtualization engine) that ties the crashes together? Could it be a network issue? Are you installing your software from a common image that might be corrupted? Are you using any other USB peripherals that might be responsible? Could it be that something else is going wrong and making it look like a USB fault?
I'm no computer engineer, but I've troubleshot and fixed a number of laptops, and those are some of the things I would consider. -
What tuzzanti is saying is true. I have the same problem. But i bought my envy 17 straight from HP on 26.09
Once or twise i got the blue screen on death and i experience regular freezes. And not the type where some program is not responding and everything seem suck... Im talking about the type of freez where the machine stops at the middle of what it was doing.
For example i was plaing a game and booom.. even the sound freezes on the same note that it was playing at the moment. ctrl+alt+ delete doesnt work then. You need to manualy turnoff the machine.
Also when im browsing the internet. I wanted to go back one page and the moment i pressed the back button on the internet explorer the machine froze and the same buzzing sound again. like in the middle of a note.
is going on??? It sounds like some serious issue
@tuzzanti does the isse continue if you use another hard drive with clean install? ( i think u said yes but im asking just in case..) -
I replaced the hard drive with a new one,and now it is running fine.
****
Anyway,I don't think there is anything wrong with your new machines.I would imagine the issues are caused by the softwares, not hardwares.I mean,it is quite impossible for 12 identical machines to experience same issues... -
I have had my HP Envy 17" for about a month now and have experienced the BSOD twice. Both times my USB ports had stopped working for an hour prior. When I attempted to shut down the BSOD occurred (so I guess it isn't that deadly) attributing the problem to the USB Hub.
Envy 17 - Bought 12 of them and all Freeze and BSOD
