Hi, with all my other pc's/laptop's, I used regular standard microphone with a 3.5mm connection to record music from my band. For some reason with my Envy 17, everytime I plug my mic into the microphone jack it acts as a output speaker. Did anyone ever experience this? Is there a fix?

That's because the port is a "4-pole" port, that has four connections. Ground, left audio, right audio, and mic. It's made for the headsets that use a single cable to carry audio and mic connections, such as the Beats headsets. The mic you're using is probably 2-pole or 3-pole, and hence the connections aren't lining up properly. You could probably solder a 4-pole connector onto your mic cable if you have any experience with that. If not, I suggest getting a USB adapter such as the Turtle Beach Micro II which can take regular mic input (like the one you have).

I experience the same problem, and it must be because of the reason Auxillio_ab_alto described.

Either get a super expensive mic or try doing it through usb!

A super expensive mic wouldn't necessarily work. The price you pay doesn't mean it will have a different connector. The Envy's ports are designed for the headsets like the Beats ones, where they have integrated mic and headphone jacks into a single connection. This is another way that HP is making their headset similar to MacBook Pros.
