    I have trouble with the HP MediaSmart in 3d Mode as the 3d glasses only active on the left side and the right side goes dark! Do any of you know how to fix this? While using the Tridef software, both sides works fine.

    Well I just RMA my Envy 17 so going to say farewell to this awesome laptop for a while until the Sandy Bridge versions pop up.
    Coming from a 2005 Inspirion 9200 this laptop has been unbelievable but I am sure it will be even more so in a couple months.

    I purchased it with the $400 coupon for $1199 and knew it was a good deal so I feel kind of worried about making the wrong move, but I know the SB processor and 6850 will make it worth it.

    Considering I purchased this Nov 2, recieved it Nov 29, and returned it with no hassles from customer service I am very pleased with HP.
    Plus I think I get to keep the extra power adapter they sent me. ;)

    Hopefully be back in these forums in a couple of months.

    The updated HP ENVY 17 and HP ENVY 17 3D are expected to be available from end February, with a starting price of US$1699.00 and US$2099.00 respectively. Additional information about the HP ENVY range is available at www.hp.com/apac/envy.----from the site Snowman gave

    I dont know where they get this info but the price and release date is kind of disappointing. Thats a 400$ price increase if they mean the base price. And end feb??!! are you serious, that sucks.

    I had the same issue regardless of A/C power or on-battery power...try changing the power settings to "High Performance"
    even when laptop is on battery, set it to High Performance and it will work smoothly...of course it will die fast but at least no skipping and strolling

    I just received my Envy 17 3D last weekend. Should I return this and wait for 2 months?

    coughman, welcome to NBR and congradts on joining the Envy 17 3D people :eek: While it is true, many of us who orginally bought the Envy 17 3D are now returning it to HP and waiting for the new Sandy Bridge version of this amazing laptop for the various reasons already stated in the other threads, some of which again are a cooler running laptop, HD 6850 although a rebranded card, has a few tweaks such as HDMI 1.4a support to watch 3D on an external device like a 3D capable tv. There are other tweaks that you can look up...

    The bottom line is, you will have to decide for yourself... To help you out, base your decision on a few factors.

    1. Can you afford to be without this laptop for a couple months. If all goes to plan you should have the new Envy in your hands by the end of March.

    2. We are not sure how this will affect the price. There is speculation of possibly $500 price hike for the base model, but that sounds impossible.

    3. I have a "loaner" to tie me over until I get my new Envy, so I'm good. If you can get a laptop to cover you for this time gap than I say, why not go for it....again...its really up to you after you go through the options. Good luck, and ask if you have any more questions. Everyone is very cool here.

    Am I the only one that finds it IRONIC that most of the complaints about the ENVY have been in regards to the HEAT, and now HP magically claims to have COOLSENSE technology ???

    HP CoolSense Technology

    Mobile computing just got more comfortable. HP CoolSense technology can detect where you’re working and automatically adjust your PC’s cooling to prevent overheating.

    Thanks to HP CoolSense technology, working on the go is noticeably cooler and more comfortable. From venting to the electronic components, the entire system is engineered with your comfort in mind.

    Automatic detection system uses the motion sensor in your notebook PC to sense where your PC is being used and automatically adjust the cooling.
    Strategically placed vents minimize heat and channel it away from the PC’s base to keep your notebook PC from overheating.

    HP Thermal Assistant software allows you to specify your cooling preferences (maximum cooling, quiet or optimized performance) and automatically shifts into that mode when you’re mobile.

    The Snowman, I don't see it as magic. Just shows that HP actually listened this time..... at least they had to because many folks were complaining and returning their units just for this issue alone.

    I'll be interested so see what they changed hardware wise. I've opened the 3D and know that thing like the back of my hand, so I'm guessing this coolsense tech is all software - just like the crappy beats audio.

    yea, remember guys, what we've seen and discussed in other threads. CoolSense is three things:

    * accelerometer based motion sensing to detect if you are on a table or not
    * strategically placed vents
    * HP Thermal assistant software

    For SB Envy 17, announced on Jan 4 to posses CoolSense, it appears we can look foward to all of the above (let the first to get one, post pics so that armourned can tell us if the vents changed) In addition, I'm going to opt for the SSD for C:\ and include only one rotating (2nd) drive. I think we sometimes underestimate the value of the 9-cell battery as well, for the additional clearance around the intake vents.

    If HP puts vents in the front of the Envy 17 R2 and cause the air to be drawn from the front to the exhaust, I think it will make a significant difference. The issue with the current Envy 17 is that it draws the air directly from underneath the fan and the exhaust is just inches away on the left side. This means that there is no way for the heat to escape from left wrist area other than through the heatsink.

    If you examine the pictures of the DM3 you'll see that it has vents all along the front side of the laptop. I hope they do the same with the Envy 17 R2 without losing the beautiful design and rigidity of the current model.

    You might be able to do it from the hard drive

    If the System is still booting into Windows, you can burn 1 set, use high quality DVD+R media, don't use the PC while the discs are burning.
