    Hi

Ive been using the Envy 17 3D for a month or two now and for the last few weeks I have been experiencing random freezes while using my laptop. The screen freezes seemingly randomly and I am forced to hard reboot it. This can happen a few times a day, other than that the laptop is performing excellently. Also freezes never happen while under heavy load /playing games, video editing), but between normal windows operations (startup, deleting/moving files, playing web video, or just browsing the web).

After getting the laptop I did a clean windows install and made sure to install all HP drivers. I also bought the laptop in the USA and am using it in Europe if that might mean anything.
Ive had the RAM tested and it does not seem to be the cause of the issue. I have also reinstalled all of the drivers and nothing seams to fix the problem.

Any idea what could be causing this? Id like to try to fix this problem myself before sending it for a repair, since I need it for work.

    Thanks!

LookaB, welcome to our NBR/Envy forums. :) Eventhough the Envy 17 3D is an amazing laptop, its still prone to issues most laptops are likely to experience. I have read several posts here on others laptops freezing, and some of these posters ended up sending their laptops back for a fix. I understand you not wanting to send it back, as many times you get more problems back, such as scratches, dents, etc...

I am not a techie, so I will only give the 2 answers that I can come up with. I know you did a clean install, but if I may suggest, and if its not too much trouble for you:

    1. If you did not delete the recovery partition from your primary drive, I would suggest to do a FACTORY RECOVERY from your recovery partition. Once brought to factory status, see if your problem still exists. If not.....I can only guess it may have to do with one of the programs you installed, and/or driver conflicts???

    2. If you tried option 1 and it still freezes, or if you do not want to do a factory recovery, then just call the dedicated ENVY tech support and let them run whatever diagnostic tests that need to be done. They would hopefully give you the best answer and if you need to return your laptop or if they can do an on the phone fix for you.

I had super slow speeds that the Envy tech told me was a bad pathway on the MOBO, (this was after running a hard drive test that Envy tech asked me to do) so I had to send it back for a replacement, which I'm eagerly waiting for. :D

KJ's advice is solid. When you reinstalled the drivers, did you use any utility to make sure that the old ones were properly uninstalled and deleted?

Sounds like you've taken most of the right steps, the ball is going to be in HP's court.

Thanks for the advice. I formated my PC before installing new drivers, so there probably was no problem with old drivers.

I was hoping (perhaps foolishly) for a magic fix, but I guess a hardware malfunction will probably be the cause.
The only thing that is making me think this might be a software issue is that there were no problems like this the first few weeks of using this PC, it all started after reformatting and adding various programs.
Ill report back if the issue gets resolved.

Hey I just got my envy 17 last week and I was wondering if you ended solving your issues with your laptop?

Try this wifi driver. If it doesn't solve the freezing issues, then there's something else going on.
Also, be careful that windows update isn't set to install updates automatically, as it will just overwrite the older driver when it feels like it.
