Has anyone experienced this with theirs? It seems to randomly reboot when im not using it, like when its sitting idle overnight. I dont use sleep or hibernation modes. No memory dumps through Windows and now all HP Drivers through their website. I just uninstalled windows update's "data protection sensor" driver and installed HP's. I have a 2070nr model, I took out both hard drives, replaced with an Intel X25M 120gb SSD, and did a clean install of Win7 Ult x64. I ran memory tests through the HP Diagnostics with a complete pass. Im running out of ideas. Any suggestions/tips?
After receiving the my replacement laptop, the newer upgraded model HP sent me still had the same issue. For the people that are still experiencing this random reboot issue, it definitely is the video driver. If you download this hotfix driver 11.5b, install, and you should be good to go. Note that the brightness keys will not work, along with switchable graphics to the intel chipset. Hopefully HP updates theirs on the site. I even called HP on this issue and let them know its the driver, not the hardware.
Final fix here:

Don't quote me on this, but I believe there are others on the Envy 17 (2xxx) thread experiencing the same issue.
I am starting to worry a bit about this, as my Envy is scheduled to be delivered today
-
Yeah, i posted this in there also, but had no responses.

Not sure about the reboots...I know the 6200 card has caused freezing of the laptop...but worth looking into and downgrading to the 13... version. Hope someone can help you guys with this. The Envy is too awesome to return, unless truly defective of course.

Yeah, i already downgraded to that driver, that was my first issue I fixed reading through the thread.
Update::5/14/2011
Yesterday this happened twice to me and finally windows gave me a memory.dmp log. Installed windows debugger and it was atikmdag.sys that keeps giving me a BSOD and automatically rebooting.
The thing thats weird is, this is the 2nd time installing the same version off HP's site and some files were out of date while doing a custom install, and some were same version. Oh well hopefully this is the fix! -
Well guys, a couple more BSOD/reboots I called HP again. After totally deleting drivers and reinstalling them as HP's reps directed me to do without any luck. Today I called in to send in for repair. Will update when received back to see if it happens again.
-
Thats some bad news.
Did you installed anything outside HP programs? -
Nothing out of the usual, just some games. My computer will just be on idle with probably just AIM running and it just reboots. I googled atikmdag.sys and some people say it sometimes has to do with defective hardware. Hopefully this gets fixed!

Weird.
Games cant modify just some files so games are out of the case.
But anyway, your notebook is at repair services.
So all you can do is waiting.. -

I'm having a very similar issue with my envy 14 beats edition. I had stock drivers and my computer freezes during games. I tried the 11.5b hotfix and it still has the issue.. i just did a clean windows 7 install, and am going to try to reinstall drivers when i get a chance.
also to note, my computer has not been having the restarts unless a program attempts to utilize my 5650 graphics card. on the intel graphics, things are OK. However, one of the main reasons i purchased the envy was for the gaming capabilities..
any other tips or suggestions as i proceed? especially for the graphics drivers which seems it is likely the cause of the problem.. -
I never ran into an issue of my 17 freezing, it would just randomly BSOD and reboot the computer automatically. If the driver update doesn't fix it, i'd suggest possibly going through warranty. Make sure your chipset drivers are also updated, I did mine through intel.com and just download the chipset software.

It was mainly random reboots for me, but also some freeznig meaning my display looks like an old TV set or something, and i have to hold down the power button to reboot.
Also interesting to note, my envy14 came preinstalled with BIOS F.24.. however HP's website only shows F.23.
My exact model is the HP ENVY 14t-1200 CTO Beats Edition Notebook PC

my main question is, should i use the drivers above, the stock swsetup drivers, or only the hotfix? or the stock+hotfix like the 11.5b thread?
I tried all 3 with no success.. but I've done a clean windows7 install only and backed up with norton ghost. I can keep trying different combinations of drivers, but I'm scared right now. -
Happened twice on mine, same culprit.
Hopefully HP will update the video driver soon, as I'm using intel HD graphic most of the time and only switch to ATI when gaming only. So I need that switchable capabilities. -
Mklasse, they just did and it resolves the problem.
