Help, my new Envy 17 I just got last night keep freezing up when I am using it. The whole screen freezes and I had to do a hard restart. It's very randon on when and how often it does it. So far with 1 hour of use I've had 4 - 5 freezes. The only thing I have attached to it is a HP wireless mouse.

Please help, this thing is like a time bomb.

Hi, luckily for you, some of us on this board has had the same problem and been going on like crazy trying to figure out a solution (personally I spent around 16 hours the last two days), and earlier today we did infact figure it out. I'll just quote my post from earlier today for you.

    Good luck :)

So far cross my fingers hasn't crash. But now I do notice on the lower right tool bar on windows the Intel My wifi technology adaptor says not found. Is that normal after doing the above?

at first yeah, but restart again and it should be ok. I only installed the driver though, and not the package with the software.

For some reason the Intel wifi technology won't allow me to enable it again.

Strange. I haven't used it much so I can't help you there, but if you're not planning to share your internet connection through your laptop, there's no reason to have that program.

I'll say this... My laptop is on the way. If it freezes up on me 5 times in an hour and gives me problems Im not gonna kill myself trying to FIX it. Its going right back to HP. Thats like buying a brand new car with an engine that needs an overhaul, NO THANKS.

I don't blame you. I feel the same way. I have no qualms having them pay for shipping it back. Should have built it correctly in the FIRST place.

I only feel bad for those like apoxxx who cannot afford to be without a computer whatever reasons. For my part I can deal with waiting a little longer. Especially if the trouble was caused by HP and I feel like its up to HP to fix it themselves....

Well now that I know it's a $35 fix from Amazon, then I really don't mind, even though I agree it should have been this way to begin with.

After replacing the Wifi card with a newer one, fiver5 could use any driver he wanted without any freezes. Luckily my laptop is 110% perfect except this wifi issue. No cosmetic blemishes, and no dead pixels whatsoever, so yeah, this is a keeper.
Intel 6300 Wifi is on it's way with Fedex :)

Oh and if we hadn't found a fix for the freezes, and the computer would lock up every 5min, I'd ofcourse send it back, even if I can¨t be without a computer. I'd just get some temporary $250 laptop from walmart and sell it on ebay afterwards.

So the 6300 has no lock ups after replacing the 6200? Other users on HP forum saying made no difference, ENVY still locking up with the change to 6300?

    Hey Apoxxx,

Did you have any joy after getting the 6300 wireless card?

I like so many others am having the freezing issue with my envy 17, I tried the suggestions here and downgraded the wireless driver and turn off the powersave. This did reduce the freezes but not get rid of them..

So before I go out and buy one, did the 6300 solve all freezing issues?

    thanks!

I am actually having a similar experience. I have the Envy 17 1181NR and it started to freeze a little bit ago. The freezers are intermittent and inconsistent. I have run every diagnostic that I have been able to fine and everything seems to be coming up fine with the HD, RAM, and Video Card. I have flashed the BIOS and done all the update checks (Drivers, programs, etc). After I flashed the BIOS things seemed to be a bit better and the freezes happened a little less often. Sometimes I am able to get 5 minutes, sometimes hours between freezes.
I have not tried this fix with the WiFi, I had not had a freeze in Safe Mode but I wasn’t in that for any sort of significant amount of time. With freezing during boot and in BIOS I find it unlikely that it’s the WiFi but I am open to anything at this point.
With the stuff that has been happening I am hearing people say motherboard and I am pretty leery about trying to replace that.

Any information or suggestions anyone has would be great. Thanks.
