I'm looking to max out the specs on an HP CTO laptop. Currently running a dv7t with i7 Q720, 6 gigs, 2 - 5 x 7200, GT 230M. Need another system and ordered an Envy 17, but didn't quite max it out. Now I'm looking at the dv8t and it offers an i7 840QM, 256 SSD plus 500 7200 hdd, same GT230M. Envy17 is setup comparably with ATI 5850 but it doesn't offer the same SSD HDD combo. I want to run Corel VideoStudio x2pro which puts a good draw on my dv7t in the rendering. Any opinions?

Just configure an Envy 17 with the single SSD, then add your own HDD later. But that's if you need the Envy 17. If your gaming at all then get the Envy. If not, the DV8t is probably cheaper.

I wonder if it's in HPs grand scheme to lure customers into choosing among it's offering by NOT offering identical features in the various models. I noticed Asus offering single 1TB HDDs. HP puts a 256 SSD on the DV8 and only a 160 on the envy. I seem to grow my data fairly large and like to buy as much storage as possible. I definitely do not do gaming.
