    Envy 17-r107na (i7 6700hq) whitelist question

    Hey everyone :)

    I recently acquired a used Envy 17-r107na (with 6-th gen intel cpu) and so far I am loving it, however I cannot find any information on the net, regarding if these series had bios whitelists for various interchangeable components, so I'd really appreciate it if you guys could share your knowledge :)

    The components I would like to know, if are not whitelisted are:
    m.2 SATA SSDs
    m.2 wifi cards

    As far as I know there are no known "white lists" for SSD-Drives nor wifi Cards.

    If anything its hit or miss. The M.2 drive only support M.2 Speed and not NVMe Speeds. Meaning you would have to do some Bios Meddling, provided this model even uses a PCIe 3.0 lane for the M2 Sata drives. Any M.2 Drive works in the M.2 Sata slot and most M.2 wifi cards will work in the wifi slot in that system.
    Regarding the Wifi Cards its really a matter of wether there are drivers for your OS available.

    The reason for asking these questions is, my previous "media consumption" machine was a 1st gen Envy 17 3D and on that laptop HP had locked down the Wi-Fi cards. Now, I read they had removed the whitelists on 3rd gen EliteBooks and up, which I can confirm by playing with a 8570W for a while, but I have no idea if they had done that on their other SKU's like the Envy series.

    Thanks for pointing out the SSD specifics, I was aware that the laptop uses SATA only m.2 devices (such a shame really, for a Skylake based arch), but being HP they could probably lock that down as well, hence my inquiry about that.

    Hopefully, the wireless cards are changeable, since I am not very happy with the Intel 7265 and I am considering throwing in something newer.

    Hey everyone,

    Just wanted to share with any other owners of this laptop, who are looking to upgrade their wifi card … Unfortunately we are screwed, it's indeed BIOS locked. I bought an Intel 9260 wireless card and the laptop displays the dreaded unsupported hardware error and refuses to boot.
    I cannot believe hp is still doing this, thought hp had grown up and stopped doing this crap, that other brands don't do, as far as I am informed :(
