Here are the problems (USB ports #1 front right, #2 front left, #3 back left, #4 back right):
    1. USB ports 1,2 & 4 do not charge my devices when the power is OFF and AC cord is connected. All ports on my 2010 Envy 15 recharges.
    2. USB port 3, contrary to the other ports, recharges my devices when the power is OFF and AC cord is connected.
    3. USB ports 1, 2 & 4 recognizes my Galaxy Note while in Windows.
    4. USB port 3 does not recognize my Galaxy Note while in Windows. But it seems to recognize other devices.

My first 17t-3200 had this problem, plus the speakers emitted a constant LOUD audible buzzing sound. My second 17t-3200 has this USB problem.

I've done a full recovery on both units with no success. I've updated the bios several times, chipset drivers several times, usb 3.0 drivers several times, and bascially every other driver several times with no success - on both units.

Can anyone replicate my charging problem?

That is strange. I would not expect the powers to be powered if the computer is off.

Some laptops/desktop boards keep them on, some don't. What's strange with my 17t-3200 is one port still retains power. Do you have a 17t-3200?

Indeed. At work I have a Lenovo T-420 and it has one port that is located on the back that is a powered port which allows you to charge things when it is off. This is a feature of the laptop and this port is yellow so that you know it's different from the other regular ports.

Yes I do, and I can try this on mine tonight and let you know if it behaves the same way. :)

Which port on the Lenovo T-420 still charges devices with the power off? The blue is USB 3.0.

Only the yellow one on the rear.

Apparently, like yours, only my "port #3" (the back left, nearest to the DVD drive) charges devices when the computer is off. I believe this is by design, as if you will notice this port has a little lightning bolt next to it on the frame of the computer to indicate this port has this feature. The other ports do not have this lightning bolt.

BTW, all four of my ports recognize my iPhone 4 as well.

Great find on the lightning bolt. It then must be something about the Galaxy Note hardware that's not compatible with port 3. BTW you can diagnose the hardware, ie port number and sata speed, by using programs like HWiNFO32. - thanks

had issue with my left side usb not charging had to send it in for repair
replacing the motherboard, they did not have the parts so they replaced the laptop for me

this laptop is discontinued so they will probably offer you a different model

the process took over 3 months

    HP repair sucks

Not sure what they would replace it with. Maybe an Envy dv7t-7200. It's similar but not quite the same.

Thanks, but I never would have noticed this without your original message, so the credit goes to you!

The repair process could use some improvements. I'm very happy with my ENVY 17t-3200. This is my second HP laptop. Our Pavilion dv6t from last year is still working great and we have had no problems with either. The things I most like about HP are the customization possibilities and the 12-months no-interest payments with the HP Preferred account. Nobody else offers those.

Looks like port #3 recognizes my Galaxy Note 2, but not my original Note.

It's pretty stupid how none of my left (DVD) USB ports work with any of my external HDDs. I've tried three different drives, and it's the same story. Not important enough to RMA and live without a computer for a month, but annoying all the same.
