Envy Refurb w/ Radiance

So I have yet to post here, maybe I have been asking my questions in the wrong places .

I have the DV6 in my sig. And though I really want to love it, I am not confident I like the 15.6" size, and the resolution is an annoyance, but one I could live with.

I have played around a lot with the Envy in stores and find the size much better (that 1" makes a big difference), and the keyboard and touchpad are worlds apart.

My biggest concern, and what kept me away from the Envy in the first place, was battery life.

I love my DV6 but would not mind an Envy if I can get similar battery life (think I can easily get 5-6 hours with the 9-cell, and I purchased it with both a 9 and 6 cell).

That being said, bumping up to the radiance display obviously requires refurb, and a downgrade in some specs. I could likely get my hands on an SSD for the refurb, but would be stuck with the lower CPU. I do a ton of multi-tasking, including at times running several program from Adobe Creative Suite at one time. I know the i5 450m is nothing shabby, but how it will compare to my i5 580m... I so not know (a good benchmark is my desktop with the Q6600 which has performed adequatley with whatever I threw at it).

As each day passes I like the DV6 more and more, really the only laptops still pulling at my heart strings are the DM4 (not convinced I need the ATI 5650) and Envy.

The difference would be somewhat noticeable between an i5 450 & i5 580 when doing things that require the turbo feature to kick in seeing as the 450 only goes to 2.66mhz while the 580 goes to 3.33mhz. But that won't happen often. To really make a difference for how you use things, you'd have to go up to an i7 with its quad cores.

 

I just bought a refurb envy 14 just to get the radiance screen and I am typing on it now :-D. As far as I am aware, all envy 14 machines come standard with backlit keyboard. I got the i450 and 160 gb ssd.

I came from a 7 yr old desktop so the 450 is just great for me. I've been having fun loading webpages at the same time as my work computer and watching the difference in speed, both using verizon aircards. Its amazing. I can really see the difference in screen quality when compared side by side with my work computer.

I have until thursday to return it, if I find problems, but so far, so good. I also have the option to buy an extended warranty dirt cheap, since I used my visa for the purchase.

 

If it's really dirt cheap, I'd definitely get it.

 

the i5 450 vs the i5 580 will hardly even be noticeable. I actually suggest getting the i5 460 (since its same price as 450 and has a 2.8ghz turbo instead of 2.66) if you are really penny pinching since the performance difference will hardly be noticeable. You are much better taking the lower specs and getting a radiance screen. The whole reason to buy an envy 14 is because fo the radiance screen, without it its just another laptop.

 

I was thinking of going with a Refurb'd Envy but decided to just get a new one with the $300 coupon. How much is the warranty?

 

Got one of these with radiance, i7-720, 4gb, and 500gb...

The current warranty prices were 180 for 2 year, 270 2 year adp (selected this one), and 3 year adp for 380ish. The 3 year was not available without adp.

Machine cost was the same price as an order I just canceled for a new envy same spec with no radiance and 100 coupon code. The only cost increase was the 90 more for the adp... o and instead of waiting till next Thursday for my system I ordered it this morning (Tuesday) and it will be here this Thursday. $1424 after tax. Worth it for radiance to me because I was thinking of canceling anyway.

 

$1,400 for a refurb....damn.

 

I have the ENVY 14 with an i450 and I multi-task with Visual Studio, Dreamweaver, Flashbuilder, several browsers, outlook, office and Photoshop open all the time. Now I do have a 256GB SSD and 8GB of ram, but honestly, the i450 has more than enough power to get the job done. I even do a bit of video editing and rarely see much of a slowdown although that's more of a job for the quad-core processors like the i7. The apps have to optimized to use the multiprocessor architecture. Apps that have been optimized work well. Apps that don't, hold the processor hostage. 64 bit apps also run a lot faster. I can't really see the point of buying an ENVY without the Radiance screen.

 

Yea if you are good with a 450 then you will save a good bit of money. The screen is worth it either way imho.... Well maybe not if I had the $300 coupon for a new one but that wasn't the case here (only had 100). As such it looks like both are coming because my new one was already in production and may not cancel so I will have to deal with returning it. There was about $10 difference between a new one and a radiance refurbished one with the same warranty.

Add $90 for 2yADP and $38 for 2 Day Fedex. It is expensive for a refurbished machine but if the quality is there then I'm good since its the same warranty. They said most machines were order cancellations and you have 10 days to call them to return it.

maxinfo, those are all refurb e14s waiting to be bought? where exactly is the link to the HP outlet or wherever exactly these are being sold? I tried checking here Outlet and refurbished store | HP Official Store but all they had was an envy 13.

 

For some reason they are only listed under the HP business outlet.

 

I was trying to buy one but there was no way to add it to a shopping cart???
Do you have to call to order one?
