THERE ARE A COUPLE OF RADIANCE DISPLAY IN HP OUTLET TODAY. HOWEVER, THEY ARE "scratched and dent". I'm not sure to what extent cosmetically they are. Can anyone comment on scratch and dent refurbished item?

Did you call? Or are you going by the list

Edit: Woooo, just called in and they had 6! envy 14's with radiance and 160gb SSD's. I jumped on one with 4 gigs of ram for 920 something plus an additional 10% off and out the door it was 909.27. Holy crap, what a bargain. Hopefully the Scratch and Dent part is minor, apparently that aspect is like the lottery.

Yeah you can never know with the Radiance displays. Can you return a refurbished notebook?

I think you have 10 days, instead of the standard 21

I believe you are correct. Remember that HP refurbs have a different standard warranty and returning policy. It is not concurrent with new HP product standard policies. That being said, you can upgrade a refurb standard warranty to match a new standard warranty.

With refurbished if anything is wrong they will take it back. Even a minor scratch according to Brian I talked with. He basically guaranteed me brand-new never left factory but that doesn't matter with generous return policy. Scratch and Dent I would stay away from tho.

Incidentally I ordered a tablet instead of Envy and extended 3 yrs door to door warranty for $89

For what its worth, I decided to stick with the 90 day warranty and at the expiration of that I am going to buy a SquareTrade warranty for about $100 which is a year. If you get that warranty from HP its realistically only 9 months, so for $120 you get an added 9 months of warranty from HP. Not much of a deal if you ask me.

Yeah, the extended on the Envy is only 1 year instead of 3 years for professional business machines (8440p, 8450W, 2740p, etc) that was one reason I went with Tablet, well plus I got a SSD too and IPS screen for about same price. :p

I am contemplating purchasing a cheap refurb unit but haven't pulled the plug yet on the purchase. As for the return policy, it looks like you also have to pay return shipping unlike the normal policy where HP issues you a return label.

Still though, 10 day return policy is worth the price of shipping. I mean I'm sure you could complain about something being unreasonably wrong and they'd pay it. But if it's simply that you don't want it anymore prepare to pony up.

Oh yeah I know, I was just a little worried about the scratch and dent stuff. Some people have had great luck and got units with barely a mark, but just my luck I'd get the one with the huge scratch and want to trade it back to HP for something a little less noticeable.

As long as it's not on my screen, or keyboard I can deal with a scratch heh.

I just bought one today, and was told it is an "inch or less. They don't know very much there. I hope my sales rep was the correct one. ;)

I disagree about staying away from a scratch and dent, since you can return it for full refund and paid shipping. You have 10 days to both use it and determine if the scratch/dent is something you can live with. It's definitely worth a shot if: 1) it is the only Radiance model available and, 2) the price is right. I have purchased refurb "blemished" models from other mfrs and could never find the blemish, but with HP, who knows?

BTW, I both purchased an S&D (hopefully not S&M!) w/radiance and 256 SSD for $1,000 and, earlier, got a 2740p tablet with 160 GB SSD, Outdoor (Hydis) AFFS+ panel and Core i5-520 and that tablet is a screamer and the screen is great, though not in the same league as the Radiance in terms of brightness or color gamut. But having 180 degree viewing angles, horizontal and vertical, and a smaller, lighter machine with tablet features (matter of taste/use patterns, but I am sold on tablet PCs :)) makes the 2740 with SSD every bit as good as - but very different from - the E14 w/Radiance. If you did not get an SSD with the tablet, I strongly advise budgeting for it whenever you can: the HDD in the 2740 is a 1.8", 5400 rpm, which is slower than a (std) 2.5" 5400 rpm. With the SSD, though, I got a PC Mark Vantage score of 8800, done twice, very close result. That's up with the fastest notebook computers made. Me thinks you will love it. :)
