Opening the laptop seems to be causing this. It's hard to tell but it looks like the left hinge is not in the sockets correctly or the hinge is broken. Originally the screw was missing so I thought that was the cause but I put a new screw in it and it is still doing it. Has anyone seen this? How can I fix? Thanks!

Which model? Any chance to show some pictures? Otherwise I dont think anyone could answer your question.

You can try to fix it with epoxy glue around the hinge area. Pictures and telling us what model you have would help a lot. Most likely you have a damaged case too.

15t-j100. Yeah something is broken because I can hear something rattling around in there.

Without opening the laptop it will be hard to say exactly but this is my best guess:
The hinge has gotten stiff (old Pavilions had that a lot, due the heat from old AMD processor). Because of that, the hinge has ripped off the bottom. The rattling you hear is pieces of plastic that used to be part where the hinge connects to.
Good: this is rather cheap fix compared to many other things that might break. You want to buy both hinges and whatever has broken inside, probably the bottom case.
Bad: to replace hinges and bottom case, you literally have to take everything apart so it will take time if you do it yourself and paying someone to do it is expensiveericxps likes this. -
Thats a common issue with the ENVY J-series. I had that same issue before and got it repaired while under warranty until the problem escalated months later because the broken pieces of plastic ended up damaging the fan and then later causing the fan to fail and had to send it in again but thats a story for another day. Like i said you can fix it with epoxy glue depending of the damage of the hinge area, This would require you to remove the bottom casing of the laptop. This is not a permanent fix btw and buying new hinges is pointless if the plastic on the case holding down the hinge is broken too.

Yea, usually the hinge looks just fine but it has become stiffer over time and that breaks the plastic where it is screwed in.
Which is why I suggest replacing both hinges while also replacing the bottom case. But take the laptop apart first to see all the broken parts. -

Just double- and triple check that you have correct manual before ordering parts.
Envy case is coming apart close to the left hinge
