    Hello!

Have had my envy for about 4 months now. It's an i7 and therefore generates quite a lot of heat.

When I'm just watching a stream it can get so hot that I can't even touch it just below the screen. And today when I played Batman Arkham Asylum it shut down. When I started it again it said something about overheating.

I installed MSI Afterburner a while ago and tried to get my core and memory speed up a little on the graphics card. But it didn't give me enough speed to so I just removed it. Before I removed it I reverted all settings to default, so I guess that can't be the problem?

Is anyone having the samme issues? Help appreciated!

First thing you should check are your fans (obviously, no intent to insult your intelligence).
Take off the bottom panel and turn on your notebook. Make sure the fans are working....

Will do that, thanks for the tip. I just thought both were on because of the noise from the computer but you can never be sure.

Both fans seem to be working so that can't be the problem. Is there any good monitoring software that I can use to look up the temperatures?

MSI Afterburner was showing 80-90 C on my GPU, guess that's a little high? After I played any game or even watch a movie the computer gets extremely hot, anyone else has this problem?

what exact envy model do you have?

my envy 17 3d 1195ea (i7-720qm & 5850m @ 500/900mhz, 1 vent) also gets really hot, especially in the last 1-2 months (maybe due to the new ccc versions? im installing the most recent ones as soon as they get released by ati) idling @85-90°C and while stressed heavily @ gaming reaching up to 99°C, the cpu about 90-95°C.

but this emergency hibernation with the following overheating warning during POST @ BIOS only happened twice so far. unfortunately for me theres not much to do, as my envy doesnt have coolsense. ill check the inside this week, maybe theres some dust that hasnt been here 1-2 months ago that causes that much heat, as i can remember well that my temps never exceeded 92-94°C under stress (eg. while playing crysis) in march, one month after i got the notebook.

you can let GPU-Z run in the background to monitor your gpu temps, fan speed, gpu load etc. and record min/max/avg

It's possible that there is a lot of dust in the vents causing it to not get good airflow. If you feel ambitious you could take of the back cover and just see if the internals are full of dust.

I experienced heat and lockup/restart issues on my envy 14. However that was after hours of watching slingbox with it.

The problem with the first gen i7 are that they don't have any built in graphics so obviously the 5650 uses much more power and generates heat.

Do you use your laptop on your bed or a desk?

Well I've only had it for like more then 2 weeks. I haven't really used it much except for here and there.

I mostly use it on a desk, but have also watched tv with it on my bed. Make sure there is space around the surrounding vents.

When using a laptop on a bed the problem really isn't blocking the two surrounding vents because the exiting air has enough pressure to move around obstacles. The problem is when those vents on the bottom of the laptop get covered because of the uneven surface. It effectively acts as a clogged vent and decreases the amount of air that can flow into the laptop. Thats why the Envy 15 had heating issues when used with the optional slice battery. There was no vents in the Envy 15 slice and it blocked the vents at the bottom of the laptop. Thats why the Envy 14 slice has vents on the bottom now.

Woke up today and turned on the computer, noticed that its way too loud (than usual). When I first got it and just started Windows it was almost unnoticeable, but now I feel like to fans are almost maxed out...

Gotta check for dust in the vents like zackb15 said.

i am using the laptop on a desk only. its the gpu that overheats (up to 99°C), not the cpu (max. 95°C). however, i havent noticed any overheating before some 1-2 months while playing games like crysis, far cry 2 etc. but now im playing assassins creed 2 and as said before, the emergency hibernation happened twice and the temps are 5-6°C higher than while playing the other (a lot more demanding) games 1-2 months ago.

so its one of these 3 things that could cause the higher temps recently - either the new bios version F.1D, catalyst 11.4 & 11.5 or its really dust.. im gonna open the box and check for dust.

Sounds like you have an issue with the heat pipes -- not unheard of. Most likely needs a trip to HP.

I hope HP does something about it. Most of the time the techs don't find anything wrong and send it back, which really sucks. HP spent more money sending my laptop back twice than replacing the fan...

ok, ive been trying to remove the keyboard now for more than 40mins... this is sick. i had already opened and replaced almost every component on 4 different elitebooks/probooks/hp compaqs, but i cannot remove the keyboard of the envy 17.

i removed the battery, the hard drive cover and the memory compartment cover, and the 3+1 screws holding the keyboard. and now the onloy thing i can lift a bit are the top corners of the keyboard. but when trying to lift the whole rear end of the keyboard as stated here @ page 51, its stuck inside and i fearc that if i try to lift the corners too much that i could bend or even break the whole keyboard..

btw its the first time that i am doing this on this specific notebook.. so its probably stuck since the factory. any ideas?

EDIT: still didnt manage to remove the keyboard (the corners are already that bended upwards that one can notice it - fail), but blowing through all the grills around the place where the vent is located obviously solved the issue - now neither CPU nor GPU get above 87-88°C while stressed @ gaming, idling below 80°C.

The problem is solved for me now. Opened up the envy today and got rid of some dust (didnt seem like much and I thought it wouldnt make a difference) and now everything runs smoothly and quiet :)

I've actually been getting the same issues with BC2 recently on my Envy 14. Did you need to open up the bottom in order to remove the dust?

in order to get access to the vent & heatsink you have to remove the keyboard. and according to this @ page 51 you have to open the HDD & memory compartment in order to get to the screws that let you remove the keyboard. however in my case the keyboard seems to be somehow stuck, although the screws are removed.. seems to be so since out of the factory :/

so i just blew through the grills and that seems to have removed enough dust for the temps to get back to "normal" again.

Yeah, that sounds too complicated for me. Maybe I'll have a go at using a vacuum cleaner on the vent or something...
