I have a new Envy 17 laptop, and I got a laptop cooler base for it, as it gets hot when playing a game or using a video editing program. However, I found when I first got the cooler that even though I power off the laptop, the cooler continues running as the USB ports seem to remain powered up. My older dv7 does not do this.

Is there a setting somewhere to turn off the USB port power when the laptop is off?

    THANKS

I don't have the laptop, but usually not all of the USB ports do this. Try all of them to be sure.

I thought so too, but I went through the BIOS and don't see anything other than setting the USB ports to 3.0 as default or 'auto'.

I never had a laptop that did this.

    WINNER!!

You are correct. It was a USB port choice issue.

The Envy 17 Quad has 2 ports on the left and 2 on the right. I was using the left port that is closest to the center of the laptop. When I moved the USB cable to the left port closest to the front edge of the laptop, the fan powered down.

Interesting! I also tried the two ports on the right side, and they were all powerless with power off.

So, that was it! Never would have thought that on my own.

    THANKS!

If you look closely, you'll notice a little lightning symbol next to that usb port, indicating that it is a charge port.
