    Specifically the Dm1-4310nr

On sale for $369, regularly $499

Specs are AMD E2-1800, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, T-Mobile mobile broadband with two years of 250mb free data per month. Windows 8

This seems like a really good deal for a gift for my dad. I realize that this is by no means a performance machine but it seems like a decent deal for a small portable system. He likes to putter around the house, patio etc. and despises Apple (so iPad is not an option)

My dad will probably use it mostly for email, web and the occasional Skype with his grandkids.

Anybody else have any opinions on this one? I'v never used the AMD E2 based systems

The CPU performance is rock-bottom, at the level of old Penryn-core Celerons (single-cores, too), maybe even weaker.
The iGPU is equivalent to the newer Intel HD graphics.

It will do mail, web and the occasional skype. That's it.
Power consumption is rated 11-18W, at an actual average of about 8-9 during normal use. That's not necessarily very good, but it does include the IGpu, so it's so-so. You're best-off deciding on price anyway.

Yeah, personally I'd prefer something with a full CPU-AMD's A series or Intel's i series. E is better than, but designed to compete with Atom. I'd pick it over Atom, but with A series notebooks in the same price range...

Heck, I've seen A8 based stuff for $400 occasionally at Best Buy!

Compared to an iPad...there's no competition. The iPad's much slower, doesn't have true multitasking, is bad for doing much more than just viewing email, etc.
