I do not understand why HP decided to design the extended battery so that it sticks out of the bottom of the laptop.
Does anyone have problems with this when they use they laptop on their lap? Does it cuase the laptop to not be balanced at times?
Finally does anyone know the battery life of the normal battery vs the extended one? Reason I ask is I do not like the idea of there being a bluge on the bottom.

Some people like how the wedge-shaped battery elevates the laptop while it's on a desk or supported on a flat surface. It makes the laptop slightly easier to type on. As far as balacing goes--obviously having the battery sticking out the bottom is not the best way to compute on your lap. If the standard battery is a 6 cell, and the extended battery is a 12 cell, you can expect about 2x as much battery life.

Thanks!
Do you have an avg battery life tho? I will be getting the Duo2 2.0Ghz and the video card. If the regular battery can last around 4 hours then I will not get the extended... if it does not then ill need the extended.
Also does anyone have any closup pics of the way the extended battery bulges? -
i got the 12 cell lithium battery for my dv2000t as well. on some reviews it said that the average of the 6 cell is 2 and a half while the 12 cell can go up to 6 hours! im not really worried about the "bulk" i actually like it because it's elevated and i can type easily on it.

I found the 12 cell battery on the dv6000 to be annoying at first. Later I found I could position it so the battery rested between my legs since it does not run the length of the notebook. Making it more comfortable to use on ones lap.

On my 6-cell I get a little bit over 2 hours with the screen at the brightest level and wireless on. But if I turn on bluetooth also, the battery will drop about 1% every 10 seconds.

My 12 cell at lowest brightness with the LPL screen good enough at night to read and watch movies...lasts about 6hrs 30mins. The 6 cell will be around 3hrs with the Go7200.

When the laptop is on a flat surface it gives it a little lift which makes it easier to type. -
What always puzzled me about it is why it's not symmetric?
They might as well stick a few extra cells in it for more battery time and make it go across the left and right side evenly; I would have paid a bit more for it... -
There are many factors come into play when you benchmark how long a battery lasts. The faster your processor speed, the more RAM and faster HDD you got will adversely affect your battery life. I haven't actually done any benchmark but I can tell you that my 12 cell battery has 50% left after watching a 2-hr movie (DVD running, WI-FI off, 2.0Ghz Core2Duo, 2GB RAM, and 7200RPM HDD, medium brightness, 30% sound level on earphone). So in other words, it can last around 4 hours on a full charge.
As for the aesthetics, I hate how it bumps out in the beggining and I am starting to get used to it now. It's funny I use it to watch a lot of movies in bed and I like to be in the "sideway" position. In this case, I need a pillow to support the bottom because the battery is too heavy to stay in the sideway position.

do you guys find the 12 cell a nuisance to lug around or is it not a big deal? thanks

I have a dv2000 with Turion and for the regular battery and wi-fi: 2:45. With the 12cell: 6:30 or so. I like the protrusion 'cause it helps in air circulation. The major drawback is that with the 12cell it's heavy and 2nd, tight fit with my laptop carrying case.

At first I wasn't a big fan of the look, but after a couple of weeks I have started to get used to it. Besides, the battery life is pretty good (I can get a little over 3 hrs. playing games, full power to everything) and the tilt while on a desk is great. The extra pound doesn't really bother me either.

I've had both batteries for a while ago, so again here is my take on the issue. You get more than 2x the battery life on the 12-cell, 6:45 vs. 2:00 for me. Since all of the ventilation for the Pavilions is on the bottom side, having the elevation from the 12-cell makes me feel better about not obstructing air coming or going from the main fan. It takes a little while to find a comfortable way to use the computer on your lap though. The best position I've found is sitting with my right leg crossed, so that the hump rests on the middle of my left leg, and my right calf supports the right side and back of the screen. The extra weight is noticable, I think this is because of it being a big increase percentage-wise while looking at the total weight of a smaller notebook like the DV2000. The hump is also a nice carrying a lifting handle for the smudge prone imprint finish. That's all there is to the issue. I use my 12-cell 90+ % of the time...

It was annoying because it didnt work with the laptop fan that I bought at Bestbuy, but other than that , I liked it because it put the notebook up facing me more, instead of flat.
It did get annoying though.
