For a while now I have been connecting my HP pav zv5000 to my 42 inch sony lcd tv when I want to watch a movie or whatever. When I used my HP I would use windows settings with extended monitor. I have TONS of resolutions to pick from, and the one that seems the best is 1280 by 720.

I recently got a great deal on a Compaq Presario 2100, and mainly want to just leave it hooked up to my tv and my external drive with my vids. When I try the same extended monitor settings, I only get 3 resolutions to pick from. I thought windows would read what resolutions the monitor was capabile of and then display them for you to pick from. Am I wrong thinking that? Is it more of what the laptops video card can handle or what driver?

Both laptops use an ATI card, however ofcourse the HP laptop's ati card is newer and a bit better.......the compaq card is a shared 64 meg.

I even tried installing the omego drivers to see if that would help, and it didnt. Any idears? Should I have posted this in a diferent area?

Powerstrip will allow you to choose any resolution on any monitor. No guarantee for sustainability, though.

now we're talking! Going to try this right when I get home....thanks!

Im guessing if the res my HP uses and my lcd tv takes it, I should be able to use that same one from the compaq?

The other thing Im thinking why it might not be there in windows, is that my hp is a 15.4 wide, and my compaq is a 14.1 standard. The res I found works best on my lcd tv is ofcourse a wide res.

    thanks vassil :)
