Extended Service Warranty -when to buy?

I think I might be stupid, but figured I would ask before I go on my merry way.

Reading the finer details of the extended service warrantys from HP it says that they start the day you buy them. Since HP laptops come with a one year warranty, doesn't it make sense to buy it just short of a year from day I buy the laptop?

I am thinking that if I buy a 3 yr ESW, when i buy the laptop, that I am really only getting 2 additional years of coverage. If i put off buying the warranty for almost a year then i will get the most out of it.

An I thinking correctly or am i missing something?

I've been told every "3 Year Extended" plan from HP is just 2 years tacked onto the 1 year default. From what sellers have told me, it's 3 years from date of notebook purchase. The only incentive in getting it earlier would be for the upgraded service features it might add. That is at least how I have been told how they work.

 

Yup...that's how it works. Buy today, get a 3 year warranty in a year, and you will still be out of warranty three years from today (and not four).

Dem's the brakes.

Anyway, if you are thinking about extending the warranty (or adding features), I would do it right away since there is little point in waiting (unless you're waiting for cash!). You never know when you might need it
