To benefit from my external monitor's resolution I will have to use the HDMI port on my laptop and connect to the DVI on my monitor..(*using the vga port keeps the laptops standard res)..HP DV2500t w/HDMI out..

SO, Anyone know where to get the correct HDMI to DVI Adapter (for cheap?) and I guess I need a female HDMI and male DVI on the adapter...can anyone help/confirm?

Are my assumptions correct on getting a better resolution from my monitor using the HDMI?

    Thanks,

    YES. is the short answer.

I have a monitor (Sceptre 2200 21'inch) and it uses VGA with my desktop, and DVI (via a HDMI to DVI cable) using my laptop (the DV2500t). The clarity is a lot better. I'll take screen shots when I get a chance.

I got my cable from newegg.com . It cots like $9 US bucks.

and does this mean that if I use the HP Quick Dock docking station (the smaller one) that I will not have use of my monitors better resolution as there appears to be only VGA out on it? My goal is to get higher res when going external...ideas..

    thanks again

Appreciate it Crispy, also, if you plug in directly to the VGA on the laptop from the mon, can you change from the native 1280x800 (from the lap) on the external monitor or is it still defaulting to the 1280x800 even though the mon can certainly go higher?

Im not so worried about clarity, but being able to resize the desktop when going external to shrink stuff down, ie higher res..thanks

Im not sure with VGA as I have not tried it, but I know that with HDMI you can change the resolution. You have to choose the single display option to do this however. (Using the NVidia control panel)

Hehe, me neither actually! But Newegg is the best, so you should find a decent price there for the cable you need.

I'm using the Monster HDMI to DVI adapter it's a Male HDMI to Female DVI. I'm running my 9500 on a Samsung 205BW LCD and the resolution is great.

well, i'm not sure that going HDMI is completely necessary...

i know using my old laptop (DV8339US) i could use "Dual View" (using the VGA out) and, i could go into the video card settings (Nvidia Gforce 7400) and change the resolution on each monitor individually... this is of course if you're using dual view, and most likely wouldn't work if you were trying to simply "clone" your screen to appear on both devices.

check out monoprice for cables. people over at avsforum.com (myself included) have put the $6 HDMI cables up against the top of the line Monster cables ($200 M1000) and the quality is no different. get whatever gauge you think you need, but know that the thick cables are very rigid.
