Was wondering if anyone can recommend a good external sound card for this HP laptop. They do not come with PCMCIA slots so that only leaves USB to my knowledge. It would be nice to have something better than what came in it. Thanks in advance.

Creative makes some good external USB soundcards. So does M-Audio.

I'm not sure if my dv6000 series has the same sound card as your 9000 series unit, but attaching a good set of amplified 2+1 clipch speakers to the lappy improved sound greatly. Unfortunately the headphones sounded poor.

M-Audio makes an Audiophile USB soundcard that may work for you. If you're looking for a consumer grade USB audio card, this one may be what you're after. A friend of mine has had one for a few years and uses it to connect an external mixer. It has worked very well and everything he records tends to sound pretty good.

You may also want to look into Firewire audio interfaces. They are generally considered better than their USB counterparts, but tend to cost more.

Hopefully, we will start seeing ExpressCard sound cards coming out soon, but I haven't even heard rumors yet.
