I posted here a few months about snow/corruption and occasional loss of entire signal (until lit close/reopen usually) in my 1st gen DV5t's LCD panel, and a couple people suggested that replacing the LCD display cable would fix it.

I ordered the cable kit from HP (Part No 486536-001) and set it aside for the time being. A week ago, the display went from minor annoyance to a simulation of bad analog TV snow, so I went ahead and attempted the replacement repair myself.

It went well, except that I cracked the right side of the plastic LCD bezel. I've got it taped smooth, and am debating if I want to replace the Bezel.

Anyway, in the LCD cable kit that I got from HP, there were TWO cables. One with a 30-degree "kink" in the middle of the big flat section that goes down the back of the LCD panel, and another with NO kink.

The Cable I was replacing had a "kink" in it, so I went ahead and replaced it using the new on that matched it.

My question is: What is the other cable for? It's almost identical except for the lack of a bend. Were there two different suppliers of WSXGA+ (1680x1050) panels? Could it be for the WXGA panel? I'm very curious.

If someone here needs or wants this unused display panel cable, I'll be happy to sell it to them for $3 + Postage (I ask $3 just to make sure you are serious - consider that the full cable kit from HP costs nearly $70, I don't think it's a big deal).
