My old HP Pavilion dv6700 recently suffered failure to boot, and had to be restored back to factory default, likely due to HDD mishaps. But as it is hanging on, I am still using it while hunting for a new laptop.

Today I've decided to clean the keyboard. Popping some of the keys off, swabbing the little crevices between keys, probably too aggressively, and stupidly leaving the battery in.

Then the laptop turned on while I was trying to clean under the F4 key. At first I thought I touched the power button by mistake, but nope, it happened multiple times. While on, Core Temp read at least 10°C higher than usual. The touch pad area was very hot to the touch, the HDD area even more so. I thought I smelled something burning.

I took off keys F1 to F8 with the battery off, fully cleaning under them. Found a hair under F4 that was somewhat stuck.

Now the temperature as per Core Temp went down again, and F4 no longer turns the machine on. The HDD is cooler to the touch, the touch pad still too warm for my liking.

Did I just put another nail in the coffin for the poor thing before it reached its true last dying breath? I got it on sale, and it had served me faithfully before the recent hiccup.
(Any suggestions on a new laptop? ThinkPad any good?)
