FYI: Samsung 840 & 840 EVO - Significant Slow Read Issues

There is an article about this issue on Anandtech and a mention here on NBR in the Hardware/SSD forum. I just thought that perhaps a heads-up here in the Pavilion forum was worth a mention for those that may be affected and for those assisting others. The issue is significant though optimistically there may be a firmware fix by mid-October. It will however, be interesting to see how this finally works out.

Just FYI but…

Samsung has posted the Performance Restoration Software Package for the 840 EVO series SSD. So far there seems to be no technical detail from Samsung about the problem or the fix… or whether the vanilla 840 was/is also afflicted.

Update 10/16/14:

The good folks over at AnandTech have provided some additional technical insight into the 840 EVO series issues with a couple of additional informational links. Still no word on the vanilla 840 SSDs.

 

Well....It appears that the original firmware fix for the Samsung 840 EVO model SSDs is a bust and another fix is pending from Samsung to address the drive slow-down issues. Not so good! See Anandtech article here.

Samsung has released a second attempt to mediate the data retention issues with the 840 EVO Series SSD’s. Though not optimal, the new firmware essential rewrites data periodically to keep it from getting old (therefore hard to read) thereby maintaining drive performance. The downside is increased cell cycles which reduces drive life. See Anandtech article here.

Still no word from Samsung on whether the vanilla 840 SSDs will also receive a firmware update, though apparently they've acknowledged through their office in Germany that the data retention issue is also present in these TLC based drives. Not so good there Samsung.
