My friend has an HP DV9008NR and it runs ridiculously hot. It shuts down sometimes due to the heat. He's envious of myself and another friend because we have Dells and i8kfangui to help with our heating issues.

Does anyone know of a program like i8kfangui that will allow him to have control of his fans to maybe keep it from just frying itself?

Something's wrong with the notebook and/or power brick. I have a dv9208nr, which is a dv9008nr that came with Vista instead of WinXP, and it rarely trips the 55C level that speeds up the fan. Use HWMonitor to check your temperatures.

BIOS F.3D uses the fan more aggressively. Definitely flash that in, perhaps with a fan blowing over/under the notebook to keep it cool (a crash during a BIOS flash will brick the notebook). I doubt that's your only problem though. Check to see if the temps are more reasonable while running on battery, I suspect that some people have bad power bricks (several Intel and AMD notebook owners have reported abnormally high temps). Also make sure that there's nothing blocking or clogging the fan intake.

In addition, I've read posts recommending laptop cooling pad. Not too expensive -- $25 -$30 range.

I own a Dv9000 as well, and mine has never been that hot. It does get considerably warmer than some laptops, but the pretty powerful GPU in such a slim case means a smaller thermal envelope.
I use mine with a laptop cooler and it rarely turns the fans on at all.

Make sure he is blowing all the junk out of the fans with a can of compressed air every so often. Thats often a hidden killer.
