I know this has been discussed in past posts, but the issue still persists with a lot of our laptops. After upgrading the video card driver several times with every beta driver out there, I still have a ridiculous amount of fan noise on my dv2000t. I have great specs on the machine, but can't figure out why my fan won't scale down. I think it has something to do with the ACPI Fan controller(it is missing in my device manager), but I am not sure. Any ideas out there?

I use rmclock to undervolt the CPU. But I do hope that the fan can be a little quieter.

Does it has to do with BIOS?

It could have to do with BIOS, but I have tried to move to a lower version and no luck. I will try rmclock but I think HP should really address this problem. Do you think I should have a ACPI Fan Controller in my device menu?

what do you mean by having a fan controller in the device menu? I never noticed it before? Am I supposed to have one?

My buddy has another model of the HP notebook, he has an ACPI Fan listed in the device manager. When I talked to HP tech support about the fan problem, their suggestion was to uninstall then reboot (to reinstall) the ACPI Fan. I told them that I couldn't find it in the device manager and they suggested a full system recovery. After doing that, I still don't have the ACPI Fan in the device manager. All of the things I find online tell me that ACPI Fan can control the fan speed and would do so automatically with ACPI Thermal. I don't know why the dv2000 doesn't have one listed. I would think that we would need that. This fan is driving me nuts!!!

I checked and can't find this device/driver in hardware manager.

I guess if we can find it and install it, then the problems will be gone. The question is: how to install it?

I have already deleted my system recovery and have no backup.

I have a dv6000 and have the same problem, i read somewhere else about uninstalling the ACPI fan from the device manager and rebooting and letting windows reinstall it. however its never been there for me either. Im hoping its not something to do with vista. Does anyone using XP have the ACPI in their device manager? with the fan running constantly i get a rediculous 1.5 hrs to 1.75 hrs on my 6 cell battery.

    vap87:

what OS are you running? Is it from HP?

I am thinking that maybe ACPI fan is only available for Windoze shipped from HP because I am no longer using Win MCE from HP.

I confirmed that HP ncxxxx has ACPI fan device. May be that device is not available in HP dvxxx series?

It could also be that there is no ACPI controller for Vista yet. Does anyone with a Vista machine have this device, or only XP? I have been searching but have yet to find a solution to this annoying problem (dv6000t, Vista Business).

Neither my DV9000 Intel based nor the DV6000 AMD based have the ACPI fan device driver. Both are on Vista home premium at the moment. You could ask user davidt1 if he has it on his DV9000, I read somewhere that he recently downgraded to XP.
I think that the fan functionality is customized/locked by HP to be controlled exclusively by the BIOS, based on sensor temperatures inside the laptop doing so independantly from the cpu / gpu / hd reporting to the OS...otherwise if there is no ACPI driver then there will be no way for the hardware to be controlled by the OS.
Another indicator to my conclusion is that it seems the fan engages/changes speed based on cpu power state - which is part of the CPU driver, rather then only the core temperature.

Maybe only the NCxxxx series has the ACPI fan device?

I just tried to get HP to explain to me the situation behind the fan controller. They are utterly clueless. I hoped that changing the video card drivers would solve the problem, but I think booyoo has hit on something with the CPU driver set idea. There has to be an update or something out there that can slow this fan down. I have the T7200 like most of you, Nvidia 7200, with 2 GB of ram, and Home Premium.

    HI!
    I has the same problem.
I bought my hp pavilion dv 6119ea with my F.05 bios. Then i updated (i don't know why) to newer f.15 then i has same problem with my fan. It always works and dont stops ever. ( doesn't mater if it was vista or xp) fan problem doesn't changed. Then i asked hp support they sended to me (they sayed newest bios f.16) i flashed bios again. No change same thing.
I sended notebook to hp back (it taked 10 days) they sended to me back with bios f.20. I dont know where they got it. but now fan is stable and laptop is wery wery quied. I still woring about my cpu it pretty hot it runs around 50degrees then funs start run intensively. Now i installed vista and seems to be OK. No buzzing noise (C4 disabled) no fan noise. But i think it is hot that because before with f.05 bios notebook runs around 40 degrees.
I think i leave this now like this it is stable now and no noise.
Before Hp updated my bios to f.20 i tried Rmclock and other all kind of settings- NO HELP!
    I have Core Duo T2050, 1GB ram, Geeforce Go 7400 (256mb), 120Gb HDD.

I hope my inforamtion help somebody.

    Sorry aboud my bad english.

You can use Phoenix WinPhlash to back it up.
