I have the dv6t quad edition that I got last summer. Starting about a month ago, the fan stopped working (upon power-on, it says fan 90B is not working). I've tried calling HP tech support several times but gave up as nobody actually provided any assistance beyond blow compressed air, turn it off and on again, and update drivers (which I did already). Also I'm pretty sure that some components were damaged due to heat (even when the dedicated gpu is cool, it still is extremely laggy).

A google search result said I should do a hard reset. Will this actually do anything? If the problem persists, how do I go about getting a refund or a replacement?

    Thanks in advance!

If you got it last summer, I doubt you will be given a replacement computer. Check that your warranty is still good, and you should be able to arrange with HP to have your laptop sent in for repair.

As for advice- Have you done any BIOS updates? Or have you changed any settings IN BIOS? if so, I'd try reinstalling the drivers, and if that doesn't help, call tech support and see what they say.

A hard reset may help, you never know what could be bouncing around bothering it.
When you go to clean out the fan, can you actually see the fan? If so, make sure there's no hair or string stuck in there.
Also, have you any antivirus programs? I had a nasty bug back in the days of 98 that managed to actually affect physical aspects of the computer. If nothing else works, perhaps run a scan and see if anything pops up.
