I just got my dv6000 2 weeks ago. The fan kicks on almost all the time and stays on even if there is nothing running on my desktop. This causes my battery to drain out real fast. Does anyone know if this is a vista thing because i never had this problem with my xp machine. I looked at the temps and processor runs between 29-37C but the hard drive is always at 50C. anyone experiencing this kind of problem? please let me know as soon as possible so i can have my machine replaced with in 30days

Well the graphics card works constantly under Vista if you have Aero Glass on, but I'm not sure why your HDD is running so hot. Is it under constant use even though it should be idling?
-
-
What video card do you have? Is aero turned on?
-
-
1. Look to see if the HDD light is on (lower left of laptop)
2. Look at your resource manager. You can get there real easy by pressing the start button (windows icon) and searching for "resource manager." As you type, the search results should appear. You can check CPU, RAM, Network and Disk usage from there. If the HDD is in heavy use all the time even when you are idling, I think the issue would be there and not with the fans. Somebody smarter will be able to tell you what to do from there -
-
I'm having the same issue. Running Vista Ultimate with Aero enabled on a DV2000t. The fan is ALWAYS running at a high speed and the laptop is pretty warm. However, all this happens even when the HDD is idle. Any thoughts?? Any help is greatly appreciated.
-
I read in another forum that diskkeeper kind of solves the problem. it brings down the avg temperature of the HD to between 42-45C. i shll try that when i get home tonite.
-
Vap - couple of thoughts...but I don't have Vista yet...Trying NHC(Network Hardware Control) at www.pbus-I67.com. You should be able to undervolt your CPU which should help with the fan issues. As far as the HD goes, the best I was able to do is run a Chiller(Best Buy or Circuit City). It reduced my HD temps by 10 degrees.
My personal opinion for what it is worth is that the latest round of HP models are designed very well with regards to disapating heat. I suspect the HD is causing the fan to run due to the temps. My HD has peaked over 58 when I thrashed it.
I haven't tried Diskkeeper. Let us know if offers you some relief.

how come after vista came out. this whole forum turn to vista issues??? VISTA SUCK> muahahhaha
-
I have Vista on my DV6253CL and have had no problems with the fan. In fact as I type this it is utterly silent.
Yes I am running Aero.
If your fan is running at high speed continuously, open up Task Manager, look under Processes, and sort by CPU. I'm guessing something is burning up CPU cycles. IE used to run at 100% CPU on my work Toshiba tablet, even when IE was not actually open. I'm guessing you'll find some process that is consuming CPU.
Jim -
As far as NHC is concerned it crashes vista instantly, i have been monitoring my system temperatures using speedfan and the temperatures seem to be normal, however the fan still bursts on every other minute. My system is going back and i shall be waiting for a fourth replacement since Jan....yikess ! -
Crap - I guess I didn't want to hear that NHC doesn't work in Vista. I prefer to undervolt my CPU to preserve battery and heat. Perhaps someone will jump in and offer an alternative to NHC for Vista. I want to have my ducks in a row before I upgrade...hopefully soon.

What is considered normal heat ?
I have a 6000t and the fan keeps on cycling about every minute
HD runs between 45-50 Temp1 27-33, Core 0 and 1 about 25-28.
I'm curious if I'm overheating, or just in need (hopefully) of a bios update to cure. -
I do not have a HP or a Compaq, but I have the same problem. I just installed Vista today and the fan is going on like crazy. I remember having this problem with XP 1-2 years ago, but somehow I got it solved thur a forum like this. The thing is this: The fan is constantly spinning and the pc is getting hot. As some of you already said, I should check the task manager to see if something is using the CPU. Well I did, and nothing is running. So I checked properties on My Computer and I see that the prosessor is running at 2.0ghz all the time. When I had XP (and I guess its supposed to be like in in Vista also) the prosessor tuned itself down to 600mhz or so when it was idleing or just didnt need more power.. Do anyone have any new inputs now, or was this just old news?
-
I just remembered why the fan was going like crazy with XP before. It was the antivirus program (norton). I uninstalled it and then the fan turned itself down to normal speed..
-
I'm not running SAV on it yet. I uninstalled all the bloatware and am running the basic software load. As I'm typing, it's drive is 30 and the fan just kicked in.
Does anyone have a 6000t w/o an annoying fan issue ? Mine is a the lowest end dual core with 2GB memory and 160GB hard drive.
Hard drive just kicked up to 35 and processors are at 27. -
my hdd is not warm at all, its just the fan going wild.. neither are the cpu in use..
-
HD heat. Just 2 cents
Both XP and Vista are set to defrag your hard drive, when the system is "idle" . So you may see tons of HD activity, when you aren't doing anything.
-
The new bios states:
Improves system performance with an updated CPU thermal function.
I'm going to install later today. Has anyone seen any benefits ? -
I to have the same fan issue. I received my computer last Monday. I currently have Vista Ultimate installed using aero with the Nvidia card. My computer cycles through the fan even when I have the lid shut (computer still on, monitor off) without anything happening. My computer came with the most recent BIOS so I find it hard to believe that this issue could have been solved from the new BIOS release.
Additionally I had this same problem on my NC6230 a year ago. I am starting to believe that this is a HP issue. I am not sending my unit back because they will send it back with the same problem it had before.
I am willing to try any solutions available so that we can somehow benefit from a final solution.
I am going to uninstall Norton and Spy Sweeper, I will let you know the results.. -
only fix to this..other then what Hp Fan is saying is having the notebook sent in for service... Right Egarbage?
lets hope theres a fix for this soon -
-
My system came with the latest bios last week, I realized it when I tried to do the update. I called HP and had a helpful technician. He hadn't heard of the problem and suggested I bring it in for service. Since it's one week old, it's going back. This is my 3rd attempt at a bad device, so I may pull the plug on HP.
The technician was helpful and I pointed him to these forums. Hopefully some of the problems will get some airplay. I have to think many people out there have this problem, but many don't realize it's not normal. -
First of all this form is very helpful but still I couldn't understand why fan is running constantly in Windows Vista. Yesterday I installed windows Vista Home Basic and noticed that fan is running constantly from the start even temperature of hard disk and processor was around 33C.
I am a college student and I use laptop (dv2000t) a lot to take notes and stuff so I am concerned that If fan is constantly running then I won't be able to use this notebook more than an hour. So I will really appreciate any help how to solve this problem Thanks -
Im using FS Amilo Xa 1260 with 2GB ram gf go 7600 and have the same problem. I believe the problem is in vista. Is there anyone with vista and laptop not expriencing this problem? the only time my laptop goes silent is when I switch to silent mode, but it works only for couple minutes
-
make sure the notebook has enough space underneath it so it can vent the warm air out or else you will definatly have overheating issues..
-
First of all thanks for your replies. So i am not the only one who is in this situation I guess most of us having the same issue. Well Sauriol may be you are right but I use chill mat and still the fan stays on for whole time. So it does seems like a problem in vista but I hope someone knows how to fix this problem.
Thanks,
Rahul -
Ok it seems that a lot of people has problems with the fan.I thought that it would be helpful to inform you that this is not always the case.It is not normal.
I don't experience any problem.I have Vista Home Premium installed and my fan is extremeny silent. It rarely becomes audible.I have Norton Internet Security installed too but the fan is almost silent even when i defrag the harddisk.
The notebook gets a bit hot sometimes especially at the left of the touchpad but it's not that annoying.Only the high pitched noise bothers me.
I can't really explain what's causing your fans working hard all the time. Maybe something has to do with yous bios version.Mine is F13.I think that the newer versions make the fan spin more.
My configuration is Core 2 Duo T5600, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Tv-Tuner, Geforce Go 7400. -
Thought I'd give my 2 cents.
When I got this DV8408us and it was running XP I noticed that the GeForce Go 7600 was running hot. 66 - 68 before the fan kicked in. I fixed that by turning off the speed step which made the processor heat up and the fan kick in, keeping the GPU at 57 tops.
With Vista I am having the same fan issue as most on this forum. It ran more often than not, I've tried a few things and had limited success. Maybe some of these things will help someone else.
All readings are with email, browser, and Everest Ultimate open. Before I started, my max temps when the fan turned on were -
GPU 63
GPU Ambeint 44
HD1 48
HD2 39
Cores 53
CPU 55
My room ambient temp is ~74F I know that's warm, I'm in Orlando. My CPU was set for 100% min and max in power settings.
Turning Areo off and using the windows classic theme dropped the max on my GPU to 57. No other temps changed. Fan ran the same.
I then set CPU min (in power scheme) to 25%, left max at 100%. GPU cranked up to 65 max and no other temps changed. Fan ran somewhat less.
Turned Areo back on. GPU went to 67 max and nothing else changed.
Set CPU Min back to 100% . Using my hard drive vendor's disk utility I put both HD to the defaults. For Hitachi that is quiet mode and Low RPM idle. In power settings (advanced) I changed the Wireless card and the PCI Express link state to Max power saving. I am now at these max temps and my fan comes on less-
GPU 57
GPU Ambient 40
HD1 45
HD2 37
Cores 53
CPU 55
Summary-
While I managed to drop the HD and GPU MAX temps, this particular laptop turns the fan on at CPU temp 55. The only way to make the fan run less is to keep the CPU from heating up.
I know that the go 7600 video card runs hot but doesn't seem to effect the CPU temps. If I looked at the manual for this machine I would probably see that the fan moves air over the CPU then the GPU.
Hard drive temps effected GPU Ambient which, obviously, effect GPU temps.
I think I'll set up two profiles. One for everyday use to keep everything as cool as possible and one for game. I wear headphones while gaming and can't hear the fan anyhow.Maybe one of those cooling pads will help.
And after the warranty is up.... A peak inside with some polish and some arctic silver. -
I just got my Brand new Replacement Number 4 since Jan from HP. Issues with it ...
1- High pitched noise with C4 Function enabled.
Solution= I used the power options in the device manager, however i only disabled the powermanagement for the Bluetooth device and this solved my problem.
2- Fan kicking in.
Solution= My machine came in with the F.16 bios dated 02/02/07. So i flashed it with the one from the HP webpage F.16 supposedly dated in March.
This didnt completely solve my fan issue, the fan still kicks in but not that often and the fan speed is not as high as my previous laptops. I complained about this issue to my case manager stating that the fan drains my battery wayy too fast. So my case manager sent me a free 12 cell battery. Just thought id share it with u all... So for people who dont mind the fan, u may chose my route.
Good luck ! -
Interesting observations. Sounds like free batterys for everyone that can use an extended battery.
For what it is worth. I just received my Vista upgrade last night. Like bleeding edge guy that I am, I was off to the races. I went ahead and followed HPs upgrade path/plan. Knowing that I could always start over and even go back to XP if I so desired.
Anyways, my upgrade disk wanted to flash my bios with F.11...hmmm, I am already at f.16...go backwards? Why not? After HP must know what they are doing! Yeah right!!!. Anyways, I did it and it did it. F.11 and all, the install took 20 minutes. The HP updrade(almost all of the fluff) took another 30 minutes having to go through twice due to the vid card driver update hung up. I am slowly reinstalling all of my apps.
So what does this have to do with fan speed? Well at this time my fan still fires off occasionally but not as much with XP. I am running the HP Recommended Power settings for now. I don't know(or have looked) how they are configuring the periphials yet. At this point I have baseline of which to compare. Some tweeking here or there and we will see what happens next.
I am running a DV9130US with 2gb of ram...one day I will update my sig with all the goodies that I have.
Regards.

I recently installed my Vista express upgrade as well (dv6000t cto). Right before I did this, I loaded the F.16 bios which I had downloaded from HPs site. The Vista install went fine, but my fan is running all the time which never happened in XP. The problem is that I can't tell if its Vista or the new bios since I loaded Vista right after flashing to F.16. I would be interested in trying an older bios if possible. Is there a source for older bios revisions, and is it ok to flash to an older version (it sounds like it worked alright for you Mickey?)
-
Hey guys I think I have solved the fan issue in dv2000t. Last time when I install the Vista Basic in notebook I didn't install any software from the HP Software DVD and my fan was running all the time. But yesterday night I did the clean install and installed most of the necessary software from the HP Software DVD especially the HP Default Setting software and now fan doesn't run all the time. It runs only when CPU reaches the 42C and turns off as soon the temperature goes under 42C. So if you guys haven't tried this then I would give it a try and see if that works.
-
Interesting. I think I installed this already but I was having all kinds of issues with the HP CD (install would appear to hang), so perhaps this never actually got installed. I will give it a try.
-

I don't know the answer to your question as HP typically keeps the current plus one previous revision. I had not seen the F.11 which tempted me to install it.
Yes I was able to Flash of my F.16...
No as for my fan...it was running pretty good here for a while but perhaps rightfully so. I just got my OnAir GT drivers loaded for my TV box and running through the config. It has stopped for now.
No as another comment, I am running cooler again. It typically keeps my HDs cool as that DOES generate 10+ degrees C difference in heat. Don't have a way to check right now. My old faithful program NHC doesn't work in Vista. But as I said the CPU temp seems to be staying cooler as the fan would come pretty regulary with XP unless I was undervolting. I don't if the power management of Vista does any of that or not...
--Mickey -
could you give more details on how you did this reinstall, also is there a way to just do the HP default setting software install without doing a whole new install ? if so how... thanx for the help
-
there is a function within vista that you can set to determine how high or low your processor speed goes.
its with the power saving features. make sure that its set to 5% minimum and 100% maximum. or however you want.
but by default, after a new vista install i've seen it min - 100% and max - 100%. and yeah, that will guarantee your fan never turns off. -
also, if its set to 100% all the time, it will not report in task manager that the pc is actually doing something.
-
vap87-- sorry for the delay but yes you could install the HP default system software without reinstalling the whole windows. What you have to do is go into SWSetup folder in your hp upgrade utility for windows vista DVD that came with you upgrade package and look for the system default setting folder and install the program and I believe that you have to restart you system. Also you can find many other softwares in that folder that are useful.
-
I dont see the SWsetup folder in my windows vista dvd. also the SWsetup folder on my hard drive doesnt have a system setting default folder. is there a specific name given to it? can i download the program from the HP site? or is there anywhere else i can get it from? -
I downgraded my bios from the latest (f16) to two revions back (f6) and there was no change, the fan still kicks in at annoying levels.
Although i removed all the bloatware, I am going to try a clean reload of windows. If that doesn't do it, I'll return it.
I'm curious, does anyone with an AMD processor experience this ? -
-
I am probably going to do the clean install this week, I will post the results when I do it. It may not be until next weekend.
-
I concede...My HP Laptop and Vista runs hot(even hotter). I have been without my chill pad and the fan has been running all weekend so to say. I can choose one of the power saving modes and it is a lot better. Don't try to do much more than browse and email. TV/video and processor and you are toast for performance. You gotta kick it back up.
I did install SpeedFan, not that it will control the fans but to monitor CPU and HD temps. I have seen the CPU temp jump to 50 at times when it was doing some serious crunching. Back to 34 for now. HD0 is at 48 and HD1 at 38...for what is worth.

Has anyone on one of these things gone back to xp and had no fan problems?
-

I have tried various things to try and stop the fan from spinning all the time, such as disabling superfetch, adjusting the indexing options, reinstalling the HP recommended settings, etc. Nothing has really worked.
My current hypothesis (which several previous posts also allude to) is that Vista is is either unwilling or unable to throttle the processor down, which results in the fan running pretty much all the time on my system.
I recall that in XP, the proc would generally get throttled down most of the time to somewhere around 750 MHz unless I was doing something processor intensive. In Vista, it appears to be running at 100% pretty much all the time, even if the machine is just sitting there doing nothing. I can manually cause it to throttle by adjusting the settings in the Advanced Power Options, and when I do this, the fan goes away.
I would guess that either Vista is not throttling as it should, or perhaps with all the extra processes running in Vista it thinks it needs to run the proc at 100% all the time, in which case there is probably not much that can be done. I still want to do some more testing though, before I decide if I want to go back to XP or not.
