I'd check first to see what's running. You might have extra programs or malware taking up resources.

Get MobileMeter and see what your CPU temp is. Normally HP notebooks turn the fan on at 55C and shut it off at 50C.

    thank you!

Here is the result: the fan starts when the temp reaches 55c but it will only end on 40c.

you probably have a lot of junk running in the background and this keeps the cpu running at a higher clock more often. Remove those and see the improvment. Then I would undervolt /hope you have pentium M, not celeron/.

Try Notebook Hardware Control at www.pbus-167.com. You'll need Net framework 2.0. Besides all different good things it offers you might be able to set temperatures when to turn on and off the fan. Now it worked great on my old Asus, but now on my new notebook this option is grayed. It still can help you lowering CPU and ATI GPU speeds and set active power scheme (for example on battery optimized, my notebook stays beetween 50 and 55 degrees celsius).
Interesting but my old Asus and this Prestigio notebook seem to turn off fan at 50. You say 40. That surely sounds like a lot of fan noise to me.

The other thing with asus was that different bios updates changed the behaviour of the fan (off and on temperatures). Maybe you can try this?

Yeah, I remember on my old notebook, there used to be lots of spyware and other junk programs that would cause the CPU to run at 100%, turning on the fan and it would keep running until I shut down those obtrusive programs.

I haven't heard a sonoma /sonoma not sonama, right?/ that runs that hot. As far as I know it should idle at about 43-45 degrees..surely anything above 47 when idle at normal conditions is a lot for Pentium M. You don't use the laptop on soft surfaces, do you?
as for the fan running until 40 degrees...maybe there is a bios update that fixes this or maybe you already have some option in you bios. You can try SpeedFan /google it/ but I'm not sure how it will work on b1800.

..and btw, new HP/Compaqs have a lot of stuff preinstalled...

Right, I was going to jump on that too, if it's a new HP, there's probably a bunch of junk software.

Well it is between 40 and 45 %99 but the fan is also on %90 !

No. I use it on my desk.

There is no bios option for this. but there was a new bios version available which was suppose to reduce the fan activity and the noise but it is not doing what is was suppose to do =(

Explore the bios thing again. If there is a bios upgrade which is supposed to fix the problem then it probably will. Be sure to unplug anything except for ac power when flashing the bios (yes, usb mouse too, it might cause problems). If the bios don't do it, there's not much you can do about it.

From my personal experience, I'd go for bios too. I had a similar problem with new bios versions (talking of my old Asus M6800N). It would go on and NEVER go off. Once I actually restarted the notebook as soon as the fan went on and temperature was 32, with fan COOLING my hand at full speed. Bizzare. I found that version from the last month was working normally.

Keeping notebook at 39 is obviously an overkill for a fan. I just checked mine: 51 off, 55 on and then speeds up as the temperature rises until it reaches 73 after few hours of gaming. There is also ati x700 under the same cooler (it is around 60-65 all the time). ACPI temperature zone says 100 is critical (I would not like to experience that ;) ).

    Good luck.

    Thank you for caring.

As I said I have upgraded the BIOS already. I did it 3 times with all the USBs off but no go. :noisyfan:

Just make sure the flash is effective and the version of the new Bios is actually the new one.
I guess it's time to call HP and ask why it's not working
