For some reason, the fans on my dv6-6170us are constantly running on high. I have no idea why this is. I can start the computer up and just open Firefox and the fans will start kicking in. No idea what is causing this. Any suggestions? Also, I have my HP CoolSense setting set to Performance Optimized Mode.

My DV7 was running on high because there was dust clogging the vents. When was the last time you cleaned out your DV6?

That unfortunately is one factor some user forget to do is clean out the vents or take apart their laptop and do a thoroughly good dusting out of their laptop and reapplying their thermal paste. Dust builds up over time and thermal paste will wear out eventually. These are two thing one must remember if they want a laptop to last for some time til either it dies or reach its end of life span. -
Taking apart my system was a total PIA. It took me forever to reconnect the keyboard cable. Hopefully his DV6 isn't any more difficult than mine was. How long would you say stock thermal paste lasts before needing replacement? I've owned mine for just over a year now and plan on repasting after the 2-year mark.
-
Didn't think it would be necessary considering I've only had it since October.
-
I didn't think I would have to either, having only owned mine for about a year, but even just a small amount of dust clogging a particular vent inside my DV7 made all the difference for me.
-
How did you go about opening it? I've personally never opened a laptop before.
-
Look it up on youtube on a separate computer.
But doesn't opening your computer void the warranty? -
I was also thinking that.
What should the temp normally be on a laptop when just browsing? I downloaded CPUID Hardware Monitor Pro and it tells me the temperatures, just not sure how to interpret them. -
You would have to specify the Processor and what exactly your doing. The all mighty google god could help you if you type in your processor/graphics card and look up avarage temps for it.

I have a i7-2670QM. The temperatures I get when just browsing are:

I did what sigh mentioned and had a video loaded on another computer to guide me through the process. I googled your particular model and this is what I found. There may be better ones out there, but this is the first one I came across. And yes, disassembling it will likely void your warranty. I went for broke on mine because it was past HP's warranty.
DISASSEMBLE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Problem is, I have only had it since October of 2011.
-
The other option would be to send it to HP to repair for you.
-
You should blow out the vents about once a month.
-
I've already put in a request with HP to have it serviced.
For future reference, how exactly do you go about doing that? -
Buy an arisol can from any local hardware or computer store. Then use the little stick thing to get into the vents and blow stuff out. Also try opening the 'service hatch' on the bottom to get further into the computer. This won't void your warranty. Just be careful and make sure you hold the air can vertically as some can spit out liquid if held at an angle.
-
Close the lid, turn the laptop over, notice the vent areas covered in dust? Use an upright can of compressed air, to blow out the dust, blow air both directions multiple times until no more dust comes out. Flip back over, open and blow out keyboard and screen.
-
That's the thing, there was not much noticeable dust. I did however blow air in both directions as you said. Still having the problem.
I did receive the box yesterday from HP so I will be sending it in later today for service. -
Mine were totally clean when I was having heat issues with my DV7. The problem was there there was a bit of dust on the heatsink/fan that could not be cleaned out without disassembling the entire thing.
-
Sent it in to get serviced and the heatsink, usb board, and cable were replaced. Everything seems to be working just fine now.
