It depends on what you are doing. If it is something that puts quite a load on the processor, then hte fan will come on, to keep it cool, and within a thermal range. If it is something like word processing, or surfing the Internet, tasks which don't require much processing power at all, then there may be something wrong with the fan monitoring system, or the temperature the fan reads off.

The F.14 BIOS update provides new "Fan RPM Table", which I would guess is for Vista. On HP's website, it's posted for the dv6000t but not the dv2000t yet. II believe it was posted here on in the dv2000t owner's thread awhile back. Hopefully, that solves your problem. My fan doesn't run constantly using the new BIOS.

There's a F.13 BIOS available. 4cefed4 was kind enough to poast it here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=92383&page=5 . Not sure what's changed since HP never officially released it, but it works for me. I would think that F.14 shoudl be available within a few days from HP.

The fan activity may be dependent on the computer (CPU) as well as type of activity. For example, on my Vista laptop, fan is very less frequent and runs for a very short duration at a slow speed when I am just doing net surfing or word processing. However, whenever I do DVD watching or start a video-based application (e.g., gaming), then the fan is more frequently turned on and for a bit longer time.

I agree that the fan is dependent on how hot the system gets. But it's ALWAYS on. I had a dv2000t with Win XP and the fan only kicked on in certain instances. On my new laptop with Vista, the fan always runs. This can't be normal.

Hp fan is retarded, the laptop has a sensor underneth the hard drive. while running Vista, hard drive gets really hot (way more than running XP) and the sensor tells the fan to run... the ****ing fan dosnt even bring coolness to the Hard drive... only to the CPU. so i think to stop the fan from running all the time is take off the sensors thats underneat the Hard drive or put some plastic to block that sensor from touching the Hard Drive. the fan runs because the hard drive is hot. but it dosnt help cool it down because the fan is located way above the Hard drive

Spoke to HP last night and this morning:
    - last night they told me to reflash the BIOS. Did that, didn't help the fan issue
    - spoke to HP this morning; the tech rep said the fan on is normal. I said, it's absolutely NOT normal to be running when the system is not being stressed at all. He put me on hold to "research" the issue. Came back and said to send it in for service. I said wait, I just got the system 3 days ago!

Some I'm down to my last options. I'm going to go into the BIOS to see if there's any fan setting, then install SpeedStep to see if that works.
If not, I'm returning it and reordering a new one. I'm not having a new laptop serviced.
BUT - I wonder if this is an Intel chip/Vista issue. Wonder if an AMD chip has this issue?

Hey Rocky - Does NHC work on Vista?

HP is just gotta wake up on this issue. The Fan is too sensitive to the amount of heat generated. It is just wrong or their design just stinks. I am on my second HP(first was a DV6000 and now a DV9000). Both had the same issue. HP offered for me to send in my 6000 for service too. Like what could they do when they got it anyways?

Let us know whats happening if you decide to send in. There are a lot of ear to the grind listening as to what happens.

Well, I'm returning my DV2000t to Costco and reordering a new one. It was fine last night until the laptop was running for about 10 minutes, then the fan came on and wouldn't shut off. I hope it's a hardware issue and not Vista related. Had no issues on my other DV2000t running WinXp.

QUESTION - what graphics do you guys have? Intel Integrated or the NVidia 7200? Could the NVidia GPU cause the fan to come on more?

On my dv6000z (AMD), I have nVIDIA 6150 card. That could heat up a bit, but I have noticed that if all the bottom and back side vents are kep free and open (for example, by slightly lifting the laptop from the back and making it tilted), the fan activity is noticeably reduced. I think that the vents are crucial to control the air flow and should not be blocked.

Also, I read in some other thread here that NHC works for Vista, however I can't find that discussion now. Also, your model may not be supported by the NHC product available at this time. I was also offered the option to send the laptop to HP tech facility to get it repaired (after just one week of purchase!!), but decided to keep it because I don't trust those guys, their knowledge, or their handling. Also, sporadic fan activity may not be that bad if it is silent enough...Cooling actions are always good for the PC...

From reviewing the posts here and in other threads, it looks like that the fan issue is there, but its severity varies. Also, it becomes an "issue" depending on how sensitive one is. Anyway, I preferred to not to return the notebook and ask for a replacement because you cannot predict how the fan will work on the next notebook you end up with. In this manner, it will be waste of time and futile to keep changing notebooks.

I think that the true evaluation of the notebook should be based on its performance and longevity. Of course, fan is a component of that whole unit, but LACK of fan activity could be dangerous, not moderate or a slightly more frequent activity...Just my thoughts..

On the dv2000z (AMD) it is the same problem. I think I got the fan to turn off after the CPU got down to 36 C and I didn't access the hard drive at all in Vista for 20 minutes. Otherwise, it's always on. BIOS F.23 by the way.

You can look it up in the BIOS menu or just press Fn+esc keys in Windows to bring up the Quicklaunch system info menu which will display the BIOS revision.
