Just received an nx7300 in the mail as a gift for my father. After booting to Windows to test everything out, I notice that the internal fan keeps cycling on and off. It'll go on for about 20 seconds, then turn off, then kick back up again about 20 seconds later. Repeat ad nauseum.

There's nothing CPU intensive going on, either- this even happens when I'm just sitting idle. No spyware, virus scanning, or automatic updates messing around in the background, either.

This problem occurs whether or not the laptop is on battery or using AC power.

Please help! Any thoughts before I stick my head through the laptop screen?

    I have a DV9030US and a 6149US before that. Unfortunately I am(had) experienced the same thing.

I bought a Chill Pad. It helps but doesn't prevent the fan from coming on..opps as I speak I forgot to turn on the Chill Pad and the Fan is on constantly now.

Why...I think the HPs hard drives run HOT. My primary drive runs close to 50 degrees without the Chill Pad. Second drive is lower 30s. The pad will lower to 40 or so and the fan doesn't come as much. Get a copy of SpeedFan(Google it).

You may also want a copy of Notebook Hardware Control. It controls the CPU quite well. My CPU temps are around 28 normally. It may increase in the 40s if I start hammering on something.

When I had the 6149US(1 week), I contact HP Support. We were almost to the point of replacing it. Thinking there was something wrong anyways. I ended up returning and buying the DV9030US cause I wanted the larger screen. It ends up with same issues. Go figure. As much as people have commented on this "feature"(ok design issue), you would think HP would start to address these issues.

    Hope this helps some..

Is 18kfangui compatible with HPs as well? From the website, the maker says it was only designed for a Dell BIOS- just want to be safe. Thanks.

I installed and will have to agree that it doesn't support the HP. No harm, no foul. I unistalled and all is well.

I haven't found an utility to control a HP Bios's fan(yet). Speedfan is supposed to but I am sure it is a BIOS issue. Maybe soon.

Anyone know if Notebook Hardware Control can help? I've heard something mentioned about undervolting, but not quite sure how to go about doing that (and which settings to use)... I'm runnning a 1.73 GHz Celeron M on the nx7300.
