Before when the fan would come on it sounded like a playing card in between moving bike spokes. But now it's worse! The fan has ceased to operate entirely. Instead when the fan is about to turn on it just...doesn't. Instead I get an annoying high-pitched whine that doesn't shut up. And before, the problem seem to occur mostly when the dv1000 was on AC power, now it doesn't matter. And while it doesn't happen all the time the frequency has increased dramatically. I'm at school in another state than all my warranty info. What do I do?

You may have to get a cooling pad and hope that it helps you temporarily. Doesn't your school's tech department offer computer repairs for a small fee or free?

Actually, I'm not sure if they do right now. That might be something else they cut. *sigh* This comp is only 5months old...why is it breaking already?? AHHHHH!

Your warranty info is on the bottom of your computer - serial and product numbers. That should be enough to get a warranty repair. Contact HP customer support, either through the website or on the phone. (I'd recommend the phone.)

I haven't sent in the comp yet because I had some major assignments to complete and I couldn't be without it. But now that I was about to send it in someone over on DV1000forums suggested uninstalling/reinstalling the Power Management and performing a Power Drain. Anyways he said his fan stopped working twice and he did an online chat and that was the solution. So how do I uninstall/reinstall PM and what's a power drain?

    Thanks

I have the hp pavilion dv1000 as well and have the same freakin' problem. Its been around 5 months for me too and at first I heard the horrible whining/whistling noise. Now the fans stopped working and whenever I touch the bottom of the computer it feels very hot. (Especially when I have the power adapter plugged into the laptop and running the computer).

I really would appreciate a quick home fix to the problem if there is any. Do you guys think spraying the vents with compressed air would solve the problem. I read that it worked on Toshiba laptops with a similar problem.

    Thanks

P.S - I have a warranty but I don't want to use it yet. I don't want to hand my comp for a few weeks and have technicians go through my private files and docs..

Only after 5months? You must be kidding me. Is it a problem for just the DV1000? Anyone know?

IIRC a power drain is removing the battery from the laptop and disconnecting a/c power, and holding down the power button for 2 min.

You may want to watch on eBay, you might be able to find a new fan+heatsink assembly yourself for a fee, if you don't want to wait for the warranty repair.

I've seen some for v2000 going for about 30$. Not sure if this one will fit, but it gives you an estimate of the price !
