Hi,
I was wondering what the fastest CPU is one can put in a HDX16. I thought that the HDX16 has a socket P, and the fastest CPU for that socket is the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550. Will that one fit, and work?
Thanks !

You are wrong about many things with your assumption but your answer is QX9300 if you want quadcore or x9100 if you prefer dual core. QX9300 works but with many limitations so your best bet is X9100 mobile CPU. The one you are talking about is a desktop CPU.

Why will the QX9300 only work with limitations? And what kind of limitations would there be? -
I mean technically it should work but it will probably overheat and the heatsink may not cover the CPU properly.

Experience. One other experience, swapping the CPU on the hdx16 is really a pain in the butt.
-
Also, you won't be able to overclock extreme processors in HP Notebooks. No BIOS support.
-
Overclocking in laptops sounds not-done for me anyway, since most laptop cooling systems aren't designed to handle more heat. Most of them can barely handle the heat from the default clocks.
But besides all that, the x9100 should work perfectly ? -
I would agree not to go overboard with the selection. I could have upgraded to a monster, but instead I went with the T8300 I got for cheap of eBay. I was worried about overheating with HP's and the damn Nvidia chip I'm stuck with. Anyway, I'm happy with what I've got and it performs like a new machine after the upgrade and cleaning out the fan and cooling fins which really, really needed it!

Here's a list of all the CPU your systems chipset will support.

The thing is: I'm not planning to upgrade. At the moment my HDX16 has a P7350, which I'm very pleased with. It's just that, If I would suddenly encounter an X9100 for a very low price, I would buy it and know that it would work in my laptop you know
But I don't think I would get into all the trouble to upgrade the CPU for a CPU that's just slightly faster. If I upgrade, it has to be to the fastest possible CPU out there, so I don't have to upgrade ever againI don't like opening up laptops. Very tricky, and a lot can go wrong.

You can also look for the T9900, which is pretty much the same as the X9100 but consumes less energy, thus operates at lower temps. I'm not sure which CPU is more expensive though (X9100 or T9900?)

Thanks -
Might as well ask this here instead of creating a new thread:
Is it possible to upgrade or change the GPU of the HDX16? I can't find nothing about the GPU in the service manual, so I'm guessing that the GPU is soldered onto the motherboard and therefor not changeable.
Is this right? -

more ram and/or an ssd (depends on your risk tolerance) would be better upgrades. Probably cost the same in terms of $$ and be a lot less of a hassle to install.
very few machines are cpu-bound. nearly all machines are ram and/or disk i/o bound. -
I've got 4gbs of RAM tho, sounds enough to me to be honest. My RAM usuage is rarely above 70% or so... -
SSD wikk probalby give you the most "visible" real life performance increase, as all files stored on it load much faster comapred to a standard HDD. Windows will load much faster as well which is always nice.
You might want to check out the new Seagate Momentus XT drives. They are a hybrid combination of a HDD and a SSD. I don't know how they perform, but there are some reviews on the net which are saying positive workds about it. Additionally the cost is much lower than an SSD. -
