What is the fastest processor a compaq presario 900us can handle? if it can only handle, say a mobile athlon xp 2000+, can i still use a 2400+ and it will just run at the lower speed? thanks for your help!

There probably aren't a lot of users with this model or upgraded their CPU's.
I believe as long as this unit has a socketed, rather than a soldered on CPU, it's swapable. You just have to make sure that the CPU's have the same voltage/wattage & pin count. Also, if you're cooling system can handle a the larger jump from the 2000+ (1.67Ghz Clock) to the 2400+ (2.13Ghz Clock), and everything else was verified, then the system should run at the 2400+ speed. I've read people upgrading their AMD CPU in the eMachines forum, and they had to locate a specific model of the CPU for it to be compatible. Not sure exactly what the difference was, but you may have to do the same. Someone please corect me if I'm incorrect.

And if tech support says they know I probably wouldn't trust their answer.
You shouldn't have to match voltage levels, but whether the BIOS recognizes the Barton core (512KB L2 cache) Athlon XP's is questionable. If it supports that you can probably use the entire Socket A line, though I advise staying with the 45W (1.45V core) and under models. The 35W (1.35V, 1.8GHz) 2400+ and 45W 2600+ (2GHz) models are the two most worthwhile bets. See newegg.com.
The older TBred core (256KB L2 cache) mobiles are going to be tough to find and they'll run hotter. Pay attention to core voltage, that's your primary indicator of heat output.
Be sure to buy a tube of Arctic Silver 5 too and read the instructions on arcticsilver.com. You'll want every advantage you can get.
