    Go ZD7000 Series! w0000t!

Contrary to popular belief (or rather those that just don't want to admit. . .short comings) size really DOES matter. [ :p]

This message is for Schmalfeld....I was just curious why you locked out the forum for zx5000? Only two have been locked out since aug 2003.
Is this forum for zd7000 only?
I don't see anywhere else that people who own hp zx5000 can chat?

    Maverick-
I just had the ones that were available from hpshopping.com.

    Tewellbaum-
I closed that thread because the question that had been asked had been answered. Feel free a zx5000 general chat thread and I will keep it open. Just name the post something like "zx5000 General Discussion".

PSSS>>> I forgot to mention that I went with the 80gig 5400rpm hard drive. I only wish they offered the 60 gig 7200rpm. For those that are interested the faster the hd the faster the machine.[8D]

zx5ooo or zd7000??? I have spent many hours on this question and have arrived at the zd7000 after buying receiving and returning the zx5000. I origionally purchased the zx5000 because of the wuxga high resolution screen, the built in bluetooth and the built in usb sd digital drive. I decided against the zd7000 because of the low resolution wxga screen that was available at the time. The shipping carton arrived from china containing my zx5000 with a fist sized hole in it. I opened the carton and took a look. the machine had a scuff on it where the hole in the carton was so I called hp and they iisued a call tag for pick up the next day. They also told me to take it for a test drive and check it out so I did. I liked the machine but had some reservations. The text in full resolution was tiny although images looked great. I would probably use it in non native resolution about 50 % of the time. This is not a deal breaker but the 15-4 widescreen is a short screen. you lose 3/4 of an inch off of a traditional 15" lcd. After the machine was shipped back to hp i continued to look at laptops until my credit was issued. I then saw that the sxga+ brightview was available on the zd7000. I am now about to reorder the zd7000 with a p4ee, media cntr, bright view, 1gigpc2700, 3year warranty, 4x combo, 128 dedicated go5700 and of coarse a 12 cell with a spare!![8D] I must let people here know that after much digging I have discovered that the zd7000 with a p43.2 or a p43.2ee comes with an intel 865pe chipset. Some of you may realize that this means you can run duel channel memory at 400mgrz. That is pc3200. The sales guys do not know this. I had to go through several tech specialists to find out for sure and one finally took apart a machine to read the board for me and confirm. This is very important because you will increase system speed by an incredible amount. The p4ht chip was built to run hyperthreadeding at 400mgz for full optimization not 333 like the stock build!!![ :D] I cannot wait to get mine and benchmark it. The zx5000 by the way has a 855 chipset which is a mobile chipset and will help with battery life but not optimize hyperthreading or system speed.

I would actually like to have a zd7000 thread for those of you who would like to compare notes on this model. I also would like to thank the forum for letting me know about the coupon and the student discount because I paid full boat the first time. Now I wiil max out the zd7000 and apply a student discount + my 10%. I am also going to still receive my free shipping because this is a replacement order. Thanks again!!![ :D][ :D][ :D]

mediapro, you can find a complete forum on the zd7000 at www.zd7000forums.com

That can help supplement the information you get here.

    PS.

While it looks like you were just comparing HP consumer notebooks, I'd like to add that my current favorite is still the HP nx7000. While that's a business model, it has the equivalent consumer model in the Compaq x1000. By far still my favorite notebook for all around use, including both performance and portability.

I currently have an x1000, zd7005 and r3000. All have their distinct advantages and disadvantages, but I think the best overall is the x1000. But, with that said, my wife likes the zd7000 the best - she loves the screen and doesn't need portability.

Hey guys I currently own a desktop. I am thinking of buying a desktop replacable laptop. I've been looking around and the hp zd7000 seems to offer the best value for money, however many users seem are of the opinion that it runs hot. I tend to use my laptop for long peroids of time. Is the heat a major issue and do the fans create alot of noise? Was also looking at the new sony A series seems to b a decent laptop however its expensive! Can anyone give me some advice on this?

I read that you received a student discount plus a 10% discount. I am a college student so I was wondering if I too would be eligible for both of these discounts. If so, I would appreciate it if you let me know how to obtain these discounts. Thank you!

Comparing these systems, in some cases, is like comparing apples to oranges.

I have a ze4430us with a 2400+ Mobile Athlon XP-M. Would I compare this machine with a 7000 series? First, the power of the 7000 series is much greater, but so is the price.

One buys a 4000 or 5000 series notebook for different reasons that one would buy the 7000 series. I use mine as a second system to my E-Machines m6809. Why would I spend a thousand dollars more for a secondary system when, for a cool $900 (new), I can have an adequate system.

Obviously, the 7000 series has won all sorts of awards, and is an excellent machine with a beautiful wide screen. No doubt it is the winner in terms of power. Take a Centrino-equipped 5000 series if you want battery life.

Beware, though, about battery life. All of the CPUs offered are desktop chips, not the mobile variety. They will kill even a 12 cell battery.

I ment to ask this a long time ago, but could we expand this to include the Compaq equal of the HP models to make the poll more accurate? Example, the R3000T is the same as the HP zx5000 and there are others that work the same way. like for voting put HP zx5000/Compaq R3000T

If you justed wanted it to be HP only thats cool, I just thought it would add to the vote because they are in everyway other then speakers and cases the same computers.

    Radeon 9600 128MB

Thought I would contribute a lengthy note about this same issue. After asking several questions on this forum, I ordered a refurbed zd7000 from Costco.com (actual model is a zd7168cl). Here's my thoughts on the model I ordered.

System specs (in brief): 3.06GHZ P4 HT, 512MB RAM (2 DIMMs), 60GB 4200RPM drive, 64MB GeForce Go 5600 graphics, 17" screen with 1440x900, and all the other standard stuff (memory card reader, USB, etc.) Purchase price from Costco: $1379.00 (not including shipping).

Some background on my needs: I'm a second year architecture student of older-than-normal age (32 yrs) with a strong background in 3D animation and computer sales. Used to work for the high-end systems manufacturers such as Intergraph (remember them?) and BOXX, so I grew up with quoting 3D benchmarks, texture memory, etc. Now that I'm in architecture in school and need a laptop for classes, I naturally wanted something that played great games, but I could also use 3DS MAX, Softimage, Photoshop, AutoCAD, MicroStation, Dreamweaver/Fireworks/Flash, etc. Wireless doesn't mean much to me (WiFi is prohibited at school). And working for Intergraph meant I was used to 21" monitors that weighed over 50 lbs, so I wanted a large screen.

I chose this zd7168cl because of the rave reviews on CNet, this forum, and other sites. My first priority was to erase the default install with KILLDISK and re-install Windows XP without all the HP software crap and customize it to my needs. After racking my brain with the USB port not being recognized (install Windows XP SP1, then "Update Driver" on the unknown USB device), things were running well.

I then installed Call of Duty which at first would lock up when my character died (you know, the part where things go fuzzy and the camera view falls to the ground). After updating with the driver on HP's web site (not the one on Microsoft's Windows Update)-- problem fixed. I installed 3DS MAX 5.1 and set it to Direct3D rendering and got outstanding results on dynamic rotatation and high-poly rendering times (except for the 4200RPM drive, which I have plans to replace with a Toshiba 7K60). So things were going well at this point.

I then installed the FarCry demo and set it to "AutoDetect" settings and got some problems with FPS. It seems the GeForce 5600 is a little slow at this game, but once I set all the graphics settings to "low" it ran smoothly. This bothered me...if the latest laptop has problems running the latest games, what will happen 3 years from now? But since I paid only $1379, I'm not terribly upset.

So now the practicality and usability keeps me up at night. Since school doesn't start for a month, will this really allow me to be mobile, taking the system from my room to class and back? Probably not the most convenient laptop as far as portability, and I can't keep it on my lap on the couch for more than 30 minutes or so without letting my leg cool off from the super hot fan on the left side. But as far as what I paid for, I am very happy with it. I was never a laptop fan and my previous desktop was maxed out: Athlon MP 2000+ with 2.5GB (yes, GIGABYTES) of RAM, an Ultra160 SCSI hard drive and an Radeon 8500 w/ TV-Out. Do I miss my behemoth desktop? Of course. I wonder if FarCry will well run on it, but I'll never know...it's headed for eBay to sell off to pay for this one. Am I happy with my zd7000? Yes...it looks great, plays great, and NO, it's not noisy...my old desktop sounded like a wind tunnel compared to this.

My recommendations for people who are wondering what to buy, it needs to fit YOUR needs...not mine, not the moderator's, and not anyone else on this forum. If you're a 24/7 gamer who is replacing a desktop system, here are some pros: large screen, cool looking system, etc. Some cons: most games don't offer 1440x900 as a resolution, so expect the black bars on the sides when playing, and the slow hard drive will definately make you wait for the game to load. If you're a animator or artist, then the 3D performance will be a non-issue and the wide screen is a definate blessing. If you're wanting ultra-mobility, don't even consider it. But if you're a combination of all three, and not sure what to spend your limited budget on, a refurbed zd7000 maybe be just what the doctor ordered.

    Happy Computing Everyone.[ :D]

    I'm looking at a HP R3160US

Anyone have any comments? I have a budget of $1600 and am looking for something that can handle video editing. I like this machine a lot on paper, but a 4200 rpm hd makes me hesitate. Also, does it get too hot to sit on a lap for long periods of time?

    Hey,

The zv5000z, now that they offer the FASTER 5400rpm HD (instead of only 4200's, like they did up until last week), is the all-around champ now. It offers 2 screen sizes, VERY fast, yet relatively low power processors, 2 speeds of HD & 5 sizes to choose from, anywhere from 256MB to 2BG of ram, whatever optical drive, even a floppy (if you still actually need one), 2 choices for battery, and just about all the connectors you could possibly want. And let's not forget those sweet Harmon Kardon speakers.
And BTW michaelmuller, since you have a $1600 budget to go with, look at the specs of my system down below my signature, and my lappy cost $1523 after the $50 rebate, and yesterday, it looked like it had dropped another $50 since I ordered mine last week. In fact, I almost didn't get the zv5000z because they were only ordering 4200rpm hard drives, but on the 7th I made a few phone calls, and the next morning they had a 80gig 5400rpm HD option added, so I ordered it right away.

I hope you find what you're looking for - cheers,

    Stevo

    Heya ResOGlas,

Do you have a zv5000z in addition to the r3000, or is the the Compaq that is basically the counterpart to the zv5000z? If it is, how has it been working for you (power, reliability, etc.)?

    Cheers,

I voted for the zd7000 because it is such a great value. Who could resist the 17" screen and the 10-keypad? The battery life is poor, but this is a nice system nonetheless. I guess it boils down to what everyone says... If you wanted mobility you wouldn't be getting a 17" display on a notebook.

I'm too excited for the zd8000... I'm going bonkers. I want some more info on it.

The zx5000 is an awesome machine as well. I know someone who has one and they love it. I personally have only used one at Best Buy. They had quite a few on display. They had 3 in the notebook section and 3 more in the camera section. They also had a zd7000 on display so I directed my attention to that.

DV1000 series. Next time I really want mobility, long battery life, and light weight because I'm a just a weak young girl [ :D]

Why is that one NOT in the list? [ :(!]

Among the ones in the list, i guess i'd have to pick zt3000... but can one get a cute pink knapsack for it though? [:I]

After spending a couple of months debating myself. Reading the many reviews. I would have to go with the ZD8000. (I just finished ordering one directly from HP.)
I have always been a Sony fan. It is hard to beat there screen. And they still have the best screen.
But when you compare there specs. The HP is the winner.
I have a decent enough screen with the 17" WSXGA screen with bright view.
A pentium 4 3.6Ghz. Windows Medai Center that comes with a break out box that will allow me to record two differant TV shows at the same time.
    A 100Gig 5400 rpm hard drive.
    A full size keyboard.
I also bought the docking station with the extra 160gig hard drive. (Not sure of the speed of the 160(Full size hard drive.)) But this will come in handy to Ghost the image from the laptop for backups.
The docking station also gives you a decent wireless keyboard and mouse.
I also elected through advice by Belkin to not have a wireless network card installed into the computer. I have set up their Pre-N router in my home. I have then purchased the Pre-N Notebook network card. Belkin told me if I had an pre-installed wireless card,...I would only get a 20% increase in speed and distance. Without a pre-installed wireless card. I will get an 800% increase in coverage and an 600% increase in speed over the wireless G routers. I have checked the reviews and talked to several IT pofessionals with several companies. It appears that Belkins claims are not to far off.
    When I add 1 gig DDR2 4200 (512Mb x 2 for dual channel.) this thing should fly.
I have checked out the construction of the ZD8000 at my local CompUSA. It seems very solid.
The video card is Ok with the x600 256mb of memory. But upgrading in the future is possible.
Now all this put me over $3000.00. But I could not find a computer that gave me all of this for this price. Dell's 7200 does not have PCI express. (Also cheaply contructed.) Sony was close,....but used the Pentium M. After putting my hands on both and deciding what I really wanted, I went for the HP.
A service manual also makes this thing sweet for when the warranty runs out and you want to upgrade the proccessor or video card.

    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00291986.pdf

This URL should get you a PDF service manual for the ZD8000.
So this is my vote although HP is not due to ship mine out until 2/24/05,..........final answer.
