It's hard to put this experience in words. This rig is simply Bada$$!!
Absolutely gorgeous, stunning craftsmanship. This matte screen is so brilliant and with vivid colors you'd think you were looking at a brightview. Colors are extremely staturated and bright.
Not a hint of light leakage, NONE. Screen is evenly brilliant and sharp, from corner to corner. Blacks are jet black with no wash out!! Whites look bright as a fluorescent bulb.
I'm hyperventilating, it's getting hard for me to breathe... Been playing with it for a little over an hour now and it's silent as a master thief... "what hard drive?" can't hear nothing, running cool, fan either hasn't kicked in or I can't hear it. Wow!!
I'm going to spend the rest of the day playing with this thing, over the weekend I hope to run some stock benchmarks before I reconfigure it, doesn't come with any traditional bloatware, just a couple small multimedia tour progs to walk you through stuff.
Well, it's time to play.

Congrats Chris! And glad to hear the positive feedback regarding the screen quality
Just curious - did you get the UXGA+ or the SXGA+ resolution? -
I got the wsxga+ and the screen is truely awesome, everything shines and shimers. After reading much about dim and poor quality hp matte screens I was expecting much less.
I've seen most every glossy screen that's commercially available, and this screen here rivals them all. It doesn't take a back seat or stand in the corner, this screen has got lumens to go... lol
And the chicks love it (I'm sure to get laid off this rig... tonight) -
Just make sure to wrap the notebook in a plastic bag first before you get bizzy

Nice!!! I'm using an 8230 from work, which is basically your 8240 with an ATI X600 instead of the FireGL. HP did an amazing job with these notebooks.
I wonder if my 8230 would help me score with the babes? It'd be pretty deflating if a girl approached me & my notebook, but quickly lost interest when she saw an X600 instead of that FireGL. -

Congratulations Chris!
I use Dell Latitudes a lot, they're decent notebooks . . but compared to an HP Business notebook, they pale in comparison, in all aspects (except price).
LOL I get so excited when I get a new computer . . then I begin to get all panicky "What if it's DOA???", then I open it . . new computer smell rocks, I need that for my car.

(missed it by centimeters and flowed harmlessly off the table and onto the floor)
WARNING: insensitive, politically incorrect, stereotypical joke ahead:
if you date only blondes. Cause everybody knows blondes don't even know computers have graphics cards. Much less, the different between a FireGL and an X600.
Yep, I was anxious as a snake in a mongoose pit!! Only slept 2 hours the night before wondering if I was going to have light leakage, dead pixels, or dim or poor quality screen. And ooh the feeling of joy when I found NONE of that... then I could smell the roses. And there's nothing quite like the smell or a new car, new computer, or new leather shoes/boots. -
Very encouraging first impressions! Which model (number) did you get? Do you know when the unit was produced/assembled?
I'm pretty much sold on this notebook, currently looking at a well-priced sample model (PG817EA). Just want to compare the production dates because newer models seem to have the noise and display problems fixed (btw, nice of you to post about the BIOS update in the other forum). -
System built 02/01/06
System ordered it 02/12/06
Shipped 02/15/06
Received it 02/17/06
There are only a couple concerns that might be an issue with you that I'll cover in my review, though they are not an issue with me and I'll elaborate.
The multibay II DVD is shall I say "delicate", I choose my words carefully, that's why I wouldn't call it cheaply made, though it's not made for rough-housers (kind of wish it was but again, its not an issue, I'll not bend and flex it while inserting DVD/CDs). And I wish it were a double layer writing DVD... not that I'll have much use for it, but it would've been nice.
That's it. Those are the most glaring things wrong with this rig, other than that, it's quiet, built very solid, aesthetically pleasing to the eyes, and just flat out kicks a$$ in Solidworks and Inventor. Have done 8+ hour stints on this rig without any significant heat build up, and the HD and fan remain absolutely quiet.
Oh, and thanks... the bios heads-up was the least I could do for the community, I think it made a good difference in my initial system response. -
Chris:
Got any pics of your 8240? I'd really like to see some LCD shots. If the MSI-1039 isn't available with WSXGA+ (very likely) I'm gonna get an 8240.
My 8230's mommyboard fizzled out, last week. Good thing it was a work provided notebook and not paid for by me.
