From HP Assistant:
"The new BIOS update may, in some models, improve hardware. Most users experience a slight upgrade in either speed or amount of RAM available, CPU speeds, or both. It depends on how old the model is and sometimes the brand of CPU they have."
I had my CPU speeds improve after the BIOS update.
I bought this laptop (dv5-1017nr) with an intel core 2duo @ 2 ghz.
its now 2.26

also, is there any freeware to improve cooling and or defrag?

If the system is now reading a faster cpu than what is actually in it, either the BIOS is misreading it or overclocking the cpu. Why they would do the latter makes no sense, considering the heat issues HP has been dealing with in the previous units. Some of HP's latest BIOS updates have made little sense......

Well the BIOS can teach the computer how to better manage hardware.

But instructing the computer to run a piece of hardware (rated at 2.0GHz) to run at 2.26GHz is overclocking a component. It may perform better, but the downside is usually increased heat, unless HP adjusted the fan algorithms to compensate. This leads me to the question of why HP would even do this in the first place. It sounds unusual.....
As for defrag software, I use Auslogics http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag -
Unless System Information and CPU-Z are both mistaken, the processor in this laptop model is actually the P8400, running at 2.26Ghz. The specs on the vendor web site and on the box both say it's a P7350, but it is being reported as a P8400.

Auslogics rocks...so much smoother than windows and much quicker by hours...lol
Few Questions & an answer for those wondering.
