What would be the danger of purchasing a refurbished one vs a new one?

You can only get the refurb if you have a broken radiance display that you can send back.

Hrm...refresh...do you think i should wait? After all...it is a sale on refurbished items...it's not like its 20% off on new envys...maybe it's just a holiday thing?

I just ordered this system for a total of $ 1,138.94 including taxes and 1 yr extended warranty. Those who bought the Envy 14 when the radiance screen was available... can you tell me whether this is a reasonable deal?

    Thanks!

yeah, that sounds about the right price for something like that.

my i5 520m version cost 1250 or something with the 10% student discount

Good to hear that! I just hope the Radiance display is all that its cracked up to be!! :) Any idea whether the 300 GB HDD will be 5400 or 7200rpm? The person on the phone was not able to verify that for me. Just a small detail as I will be looking to upgrade to a SSD once the prices come down some more.

first run had 320 and 500 gb (and 640 gb) hdds

    the 640 was 5400 rpm, the 320 and 500 were 7200 rpm

'course when formatted it's more like 305...and then windows 7 and all your programs and stuff it's more like 280 but yeah.

finally the radiance color is too blue.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/531060-anyone-here-thinks-radiance-not-natural.html

(there's like a blue filter over everything because the default color profile for the radiance is kinda...well bad, there's a better color profile in that thread that you can setup to fix the radiance colors).

I'm torn between taking the risk on a Radiance refurb or waiting until Black Friday when there will inevitably be killer deals on new Envy's (sans Radiance of course). Is a refurb 1600x900 worth paying the same price as a new Envy? Uggggh so lame.

I actually pulled the trigger today on a refurb Envy 14 with the Radiance display. Should be here in a couple of days. I will let you know how it turns out.

I had the same dilemma but decided to go ahead with a refurbished unit. I'll also post my observations here, once I have the system.

I'm kind of kicking myself for not waiting for one of these cheap refurbs. I bought a brand new envy (with 400 off coupon) and also bought a Radiance display from hp parts store (which hasn't arrived yet) for 300 bucks. These refurbs look like great deals as long as there's nothing wrong with them.

    well.

I guarantee a couple of them have the cpu whine.

'cause I know there are people who returned it because of the whine.

    just depends on your luck.

Ya I had to return my new 1080p Vaio EB because of CPU whine. I really don't want to check chances on it again as most of these manufacturers don't think it's an issue.

yeah. I'm glad I lucked out and didn't get the whine.

got a toshiba hdd that a month after getting the computer decided it would give a short DST failure, and also lock up windows when it felt slighted.

but hey. that's easy to fix: "Yo hp, gimme a new hdd. mine is busted" "Sure, here's a scorpio black" "Really? Sweeeeet"
