I have come down to these 2 Please advise me in makig the final decision. I have come down to these two so I am not going into my motivation for purchasing.
I will use it as a DTR 75% of the time and the other 25% on the road. Gateway is 1/2 the size of the HP but the HP is much faster.
Thanks in advance ~ Warren Sloane

The HP weight must include all the packaging materials and what not. Mine weighs 8.5 pounds, and that's with the 12-cell battery (all the retail model machines use 8 cells). So, not much difference between HP and Gateway weight-wise.
The Gateway machine has a MUCH better video card. The HP has a slightly faster CPU.
I've been pretty impressed by the construction of my zv5000z (build-to-order version of what Best Buy/etc sells). I've lugged it to campus several times. Battery life is excellent thanks to AMD's PowerNOW!. The primary advantage HP has is all the neat upgrades you can get if you buy a Configure-To-Order machine direct from them. Upgrading components has been very easy too (so far: RAM, CPU, optical drive, HD).
I'll defer to the Gateway forum here for the quality of their construction. Previous models under the eMachines brand had problems with the hinges cracking, hopefully that's been fixed by now.
