Wow. Reminds me of a university department manager who told me a lecturer had left his laptop on the edge of the road while he took a photo of something. Yeap, it got run over. A bit worse than your case :D

No the sounds are ok and not asymmetric, but they don't provide very good "surround" compared to other notebooks with more spatial placements of the speakers. If you mess around with the left and right channels, they will sound assymetric. However, in "balanced" mode, they will sound ok. The CPU whine will probably not be an issue under most enviroments. The only time I hear it is at the office or when I'm using it at home in complete silence.

The casing does creak a bit, especially the part directly above the DVD rom and to the right of the keyboard. This part is a bit fragile and does not hold the keyboard in place properly.

If you want a truly tough notebook, I would suggest the Panasonic Toughbook. People run over it using SUVs and the casing remains perfectly intact.

    My 6930p with ATI 256MB and LED-Panel:

Battery-icon says about 6 hours (after a full load of battery).

But my personal feeling is: 4-5 hours (with wlan on / nearly no Audio/Video / mainly doing internet, office, email things / nearly no DVD-Access).

According to HP QuickSpecs, it makes a difference which Panel is used, because LED-Panel uses less power. So this should be kept in mind. I'm using a 6930p with LED-Panel!

Lucky you! At the time of ordering, the illumilite (LED) panel was not available for me. HP says the LED panel saves around 15-20% power compared to normal CCFL LCD.

can you set a higher screen resolution than 1280x800?
(I only see that illumilite panel is only available with that resolution.)
and how's the GPU? Have you run 3DMark06 on your machine yet? :)

Sorry to hear that. Here in Europe (Germany) it's no problem to order a 6930p with LED. I ordered mine just after the product launch, but in these times LED was only available via an individual configuration order ("TopConfig").

Haven't tried that resolution thing yet. I will test it just for fun this evening. You are right, IllumiLite Display is only available with wxga-resolution (1280x800), but that's ok for me. 1440x900 is not suitable for my eyes... :p

    Also haven't run 3Dmark06, I'm not a benchmark-freak! :) I will also do a test this evening!

Currently, I got HP Pavilion zv6000 notebook ( year 2004). and it has 1200x800 screen. The same was written on it's box when I bought it. But a week ago I updated my GPU (ATI Radeon Xpress 200 m 128MB) driver to 2008.november version and now I am able to set resolution up to 2040x1200 or something like that. (The max res before the update was 1200x800).

    So, here are my results:

resolution is 1280x800, a higher resolution is not possible to choose. I'm using the latest HP-ATI-driver, because the original Catalyst driver from ATI doesn't work ("no VGA-Adapter found").

    3DMark06 score is 2042 points.

    another few questions:
1.) would ir be difficult to change the wireless card if I bought another one? (e.g. Atheros)

2.)doesn't anybody have 6930p with Intel Integrated graphics? how much battery life do you get?

-sorry fur double posting but this thread seems to be semi-dead.

question regarding the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 256mb GPU:

could any1 check if it's availible to don't use this GPU at all? (because in my old HP pavilion zv6000 notebook bios there is an option under the 'Advanced' section to set this parameter.)

    @algram:

no, you must have to use the ATI GPU. No possibility to de-activate the gpu, because there is no other build-in gpu. But there is a new BIOS available, which reduces power consumption of the gpu in Windows-2D-mode. Haven't tried this yet...

Concerning the wlan-module: there is a small plate on the backside of the notebook, under which the module is located. You can open this plate, so I think you also can switch the module. But for what reason? You can already order an Intel a/b/g/n-chip and therefore you couldn't get any faster...

This part is a bit tricky. The back access panel only gives you direct access to the WWAN module, not the WLAN. Replacing the WLAN module requires removing the keyboard. Its a bit more work but certainly not something anyone familiar with the use of a screwdriver would find difficult.

Hi all, sorry in advance if my english is not good!! :p
    I own an hp dv5 1010 el.
The notebook, that i bought last novembe,r has the "whine "problem.I tried updating bios to the latest version, but the wine is still there. It's more noticeable when the computer is idle and it increases when the notebook is unplugged from ac and works only on battery.
it is like a high -pitched sound coming from below the keyboard.
It's not a loud noise, you can hear it only in silent rooms or by placing your hear near the keyboard.
So the question is: is this a known hpdv5 problem and it doesn't affect the computer hardware or the notebook normal functioning, that means that i can accept the whine and keep the notebook as it is?or do you think the "whine"is a problem and i have to call hp for a replacement ,repair.
Thanks for the help and sorry again for the bad english

I chatted with HP a week ago or so and asked if it was available to buy a notebook with the WWAN module without Mobile Service Provider subscription. They said it wasn't possible; the WWAN card is "connected" with Gobi or AT&T networks.

But when configuring the 6930p on the site http://h71016.www7.hp.com/MiddleFra...aseId=27813&oi=E9CED&BEID=19701&SBLID=S_ADMIN I can select HP Mobile Broadband option with NO service provider but it excludes sim module. So is a sim module vital for Mobile Broadband to work with the other service provider? ( Is sim module = sim card )

WOAH! Now THAT is top quality service that I've only heard large corporate CEO's get from pipe dreams spoken by others. That is quality service! This conference room meeting to prove the cpu whine could have significant ramifications from their production team, engineers, to consumers, and straight back to Intel engineers & production management/sales team. Bravo!

LMAO! Not to make fun of your loss but I've never heard of such an accident. This is only something I could watch in some comedy movie. I won't mess with you though as you could plant a mortar right to my house. Let us know if you get the 6930p or the one with the AMD chipset.

Thanks for running the benchmark. Where are you guys getting this software from, and is it free?

I believe the Mobile Broadband or WWAN chip is dual-mode; where its CDMA 1x-EVDO & HSPA/3G. If no SIM then only the CDMA (USA = Verizon/Sprint/AllTel, Canada = Telus Mobility & Bell) will work. For 3G/HSPA to work you must have a SIM (pretty cheap less than $30CAN/US) activated on an operators' account (USA = AT&T/Cingular, Canada = Rogers Wireless/Fido).

Another option: If your smartphone has HSDPA - you can use either USB/Bluetooth to tether to your laptop. If you have a Nokia S60 phone with HSDPA+WLAN then you can use free software (Joiku Spot Light) to use the 3G connection and the phones' WLAN chip as an Access Point (initial page loads to Joiku homepage in the software. Joiku Spot Premium offers more security). Using 3G directly or 3G & WLAN is much faster than USB/Bluetooth but still its wireless.

I have reiterated quite a few times that HP's service is well-known and highly-regarded in Asia-Pacific. Their support is excellent and you can actually bring your unit into their service centres and speak to an actual HP tech servicing the device, not a 3rd party repair agent.

I didn't have such serious issues with my 6930p though. I find it as consistent as my previous HP business notebooks. They are currently shipping EliteBooks in greater quantities too, so more issues may be reported than previously, but HP definitely has a defect rate that is lower than the industry standard. They are still less popular among SMBs primarily due to their less aggressive pricing policies.

Go to futuremark website and download it for free. And search for the serial no. in google

Will I be able to use WWAN in Europe (considering my Mobile service provider provides this service)?

Must I select a Mobile Broadband carrier to find a sim card slot where can I put in my own sim card e.g. if I have Vodafone?

I don't have a WWAN card pre-installed yet I still have a SIM slot under the battery. I think these are here by default as I've read them to exist back in the 6910p days even without configuring the computer with a WWAN card.

Hello, just wondering for the 6930p ordered in the US, does it come with both US and UK power plugs or only the US cord?

I have a HP laptop which I bought in a country with UK plug and it came with cords for both types.

To all those with CPU whining issues, I've heard that HP finally found the solution by using 'Spring condensers' on their motherboards. So if you still have an issue with the whining, its time to contact HP for a warranty replacement of the motherboard.

It's been nearly a year since the 6930p Elitebooks were introduced and I must say it was a big flop at launch due to all the manufacturing defects, and the overhyped marketing of the notebook being able to run for 24 hours.

Where did you hear that? I'm looking at getting a 6930p in January, if this is true then hopefully by then I'll be receiving one with this updated design.
