Hi, I was wandering on HP website looking for a sign regarding the future HP envy refresh, and I found that the brand new Sandy Bridge HP Envy 17 is already available in Switzerland Ordinateurs portables HP ENVY17-2000 spécifications - produits Particuliers HP with a Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM CPU and AMD Radeon HD 6830M GPU

But, I didn't find any sign of refresh in the US or Canadian store, could it be just a leak or do you think the refresh is coming in a few days ?

The 17 3D's have had Sandy Bridge for quite a while already...

Looking at the site it seems that that 17 can be customized to have a 3D screen

Yeah but they have the first release of Sandy Bridge which is not working properly I heard, I guess this model has he B3 release of Sandy Bridge CPU (the properly working one) and it also has a Radeon HD 6830 while the 3D model has a Radeon HD 5850, so I think it is really a refresh and not HP bringing the 3D model to Switzerland :D

    Whats 6830M?

    Edit:

    It's the cut-down 5850M?!?
    Way to drop ball.

The Radeon HD 6000 is the new series of GPU by ATI, slightly more powerful than the previous one. The 6830 is supposed to be more powerful than the 5850 I guess

6830m is a rebranded mobility radeon 5830, with supposedly .04bn transistors more and a 575mhz clocked core (5830: 500mhz; lowest clocks suggested by amd/ati). everything else is exactly the same, since it is the same gpu, just with a new name. 6900, 6700 and some lower ones are "real" new gpus, not rebranded 5000 ones.

so... this is a real downgrade in terms of gpu power, considering that the 5850 is by far more powerful than the 5830/6830, even if clocked lower, because of its minimum 900mhz clocked GDDR5 memory compared to the 800mhz clocked DDR3 inside the 5830/6830.

at least, theres another new listing of the envy 17 with 2 SB cpus available and a 6850m, so at least here the gpu remains the same and isnt a downgrade as for the swiss guys..

The site says DDR 5 for the 6830M, in that case, it is just a slightly downclocked 6850M in that regards. However, I do know that the 6830M for sure is getting the GDDR 3 treatment.

ok, i just checked the amd website, but there only the performance classes are listed, not the gpu models within the classes, and for the 6800m class GDDR5 is specified, so i wouldnt rely on what i wrote before.

but my source is actually a very reliable one:
    http://www.techarp.com/article/Mobile_GPU_Comparison/ati_4_big.png

    and it clearly says DDR3.

however, lets wait for official specs by amd/ati, maybe the 6830 indeed has GDDR5 and not DDR3 as 5830 had.

still, its absolutely no step forward in terms of graphics performance; a 6950m would be...
