After nearly a month of searching, narrowing, and bugging people on this site for information I finally ordered my laptop yesterday. Purchased an HP DV7-2170US from B & H Photo for $820 shipped. Was by far (around $200) the best price out there for this unit. And it's outfitted pretty much exactly like I wanted. Was thinking of ordering the DV7T from HP as they have $150 off the regular price plus free upgrades from 2 to 4 GB of RAM and 250 to 350 GB hard drive. Price was almost identical to the 2170US, but then realized the 2170US had a P7550 CPU instead of the T6600 which was a $150 upgrade and an ATI 4650 GPU instead of the ATI 4530 which was another $100 upgrade. So after letting that sink in I figured I was getting another $250 option for free so it made the decision that much easier. The 2170US does have Vista but does qualify for the free Windows 7 upgrade. Looks wise I believe they are identical, so no difference there.

Ships today and hopefully have it first of next week. Wish me luck!! :D

You choosed right. 4650 is much better than 4530. Wish HP had that here in Portugal, i am stuck with 4530 because HP Portugal/Europe are not flexible for clients.

Here we have to pay 30 Euros to get the upgrade to Win7.

Hard to go wrong when you picked nice components like that.
I wish I had a Intel C2D instead of an AMD on mine  .

Guess I won't know until I get it, but even if you check out the specs at the HP support site it says Vista. But does qualify for the Win 7 upgrade...
