Sorry if this doesn't belong here, but after some brief searching I didn't see any other obvious place to post it.

I have a CTO DV9500t, which I am still quite fond of. One of the things I like the most about it is the fingerprint reader. As any owner of this system knows, the original fingerprint software stopped being supported ages ago and was replaced with software called Digital Persona. The makers of Digital Persona have announced that they will no longer update that software to work with current versions of Firefox or IE.

I read that recent HP notebooks featuring fingerprint readers come with software called HP Simplepass. I tried installing the latest version of this, and while it seemed to install fine, the software would not launch after installation completed.

I ended up googling the model number of my system's fingerprint reader (Authentec AES2501A) and that lead me to the Authentec website where I found their stand-alone software called Truesuite I downloaded the trial version and found that it worked with Firefox 3. but after upgrading to Firefox 7 it didn't seem to work properly. I found this update which thankfully made it work properly with Firefox 7.

After trying the software with sites I had previously used with Digital Persona, I found only 6 of the 39 sites I tested would not work properly with the new software. Additionally, I found at least one site that wouldn't work with the old Digital Persona software that works with the new True Suite software.

True Suite feels clunkier and less polished than Digital Persona. Instead of waiting for you to swipe your finger on a login screen. a scanning prompt appears forcefully every time a registered login page loads. If the prompt does not appear, there's no way to force it, nor is there the ability for field customization or fine control over site names, etc. I also found one site (papajohns.com) on which the scan prompt would only appear after I switched back and forth between it and another open tab.

Still, it works with Firefox 7, is directly supported by the hardware manufacturer, and only costs $29.99. Just thought it was worth posting here for those like me who like to prolong the usefulness of there PCs as long as possible rather than replacing them at regular intervals.

Just thought I would post and say that I believe roboform is a much better solution than the entire true suite and digital persona solutions. If you turn on biometric support in roboform, you can use it to unlock roboform. It also has the benefit of being supported for all the new browsers. Best $20 I ever spent.
