I had nvidias latest driver, but it made my DV9774 fan run erratic most times. It came on for a second and off for 30 seconds, just while I was browsing the net. It was odd. It also ran full speed for a few minutes after boot, when it was clap cold.
So I went back to the older driver for now and the fan is fine.
The issue is, with nvidias latest driver that I removed there was a handy feature in the nvidia GeForce control panel in Display Properties that had big arrows on screen on my TV and sliders to resize the desktop so you can see the taskbars and start button, and nothing went off the edge.
Now with the older driver package that feature is gone....of course now when watching stuff via HDMI on my widecreen HDTV stuff goes off the edges and can't click on anything at the bottom, etc.
Is there an app or even anything from nvidia I can get to do the same thing, without installing the latest driver that caused my fan to do what it liked? If it was the driver at fault, it might have been anything in that whole latest pack I got from nvidia before, that made the fan act up.
Thanks.

Are you sure your HDMI cable is HDMI 1.3 or newer? Your notebook's image should fit your TV display perfectly, at least the ATI GPU in my dv4z works that way, but when I used a pre-1.3 HDMI cable I had all sorts of problems.
You should definitely flash in the current BIOS for your notebook. It will probably force the fan to run 24x7, which is annoying but it'll help keep your NVIDIA GPU from melting down. That's been a huge problem. -

Dont forget to check the tv settings. TV's even lcd's overscan. On samsung "Just Scan" is what your looking for but its called different things on different brands. I know sony has it but on some tv's you might try the game mode.
I always check this when using my ps3 on a hdtv to make sure im getting as much of my picture as possible. -
potential problems will only arise if the video signal as a bit depth greater than 24 and/or you want to bitstream HD audio. -

24FPS 1080p video is much less bandwidth than 60FPS 1920x1200. Using an older cable, video would over/underscan, the screen would randomly lose sync for a second, audio wouldn't work at all, etc.

Hi, thanks for all the interest.
I just got back on to this.
First off when using HDMI my Panny Bravia 42" Plasma just used the "FULL" screen setting and can't be altered when using HDMI. I know its always been set on the "Cinema" setting when I chose that when new. I know about the other "Standard" and "Game" settings, none of those refit the desktop to fit, they just change the colour and brightness.
With nvidias newest driver it always fit the desktop to the Tv screen with those settings in the Display Settings nvidia control panel to slide the edges of the desktop to fit my TV, as stated earlier, now with older driver, I put back on to get the fan back to normal, that feature to fit the destop to the Tv screen is missing. It was this type of feature I was trying to find without getting nvidias latest driver again, until they release a driver that leaves my fan alone.
BTW, I have an Intel Centrino CPU Duo, not the AMD that required the BIOS flash to make the fan run more.
I have no idea about version 1.3 HDMI cables. All I know is with the latest nvidia driver it worked fine, always remembered the screen settings, and the same HDMI cable. I looked at the HDMI cable, its an ION brand, sold from NCIX here in Canada. On the cable it says "E119932 AWM STYLE 20276 80o VW-1" .....I suppose the VW-1 means its below the 1.3 version, if thats what VW-1 means.
Anyway, its not a big deal, and I could try the laptopvideo2go drivers, perhaps on the weekend I'll try those.
Anyone know about the feature in nvidia control panel with the arrows that you can fit the desktop to fit the TV screen?....is that quite new then? as I don't have it in the version before the current one that has it. -

Intel dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 series notebooks with NVIDIA GPUs need BIOS updates too. Quite a few people here have lost Intel motherboards when the NVIDIA GPU melted down.
