Hello all. I formatted my 5 month old zd8000 mainly because I wanted a cleaner machine with better performance. I have my own copy of xp pro and was able to install it succesfully. Windows worked extremely fast and the installation went well. Once I ran the driver cd, it installed several drivers and towards the end it was installing an Intel Chipset and it bombed! froze for almost 2 hrs. It didn't let me boot after that neither. I ended up reformatting and got windows up again working well. I haven't installed the driver cd yet but I did notice I can browse that cd and pick and choose which drivers I want to inslatt instead of letting it autorun. I'll install everything except for the intel chipset. Does anyone know why I would need to install the chipset since windows picked up my cpu and in the bios before I installed any drivers it read my P4 2.8, would I be loosing performance by not installing the chipset?

Windows picks out the standard driver MS would have integrated. Intel releases updated drivers from time to time with fixes to bugs and better intercompatibility. There might be some performance improvements but that might not be the case always. Instead of installing the driver from the driver CD try downloading it from Intel.

If you do want to install the driver from the CD, then install the chipset drivers first and do a restart. This should remove any inteference(if any) before installing the other drivers.

but if you dont want to take the risk and dont see any issues then just let it run with the standard drivers. There shouldnt be no problems with other than being a bit outdated.

Coll thanks a lot. I'll be hacking away tonight. I'll probably just run it with standard drivers and if I have any issues I'll get the drivers straight from Intel.

It definatly seems quicker since I reformated, but I guess the real test will be when I install the software I want on it and see how it runs then.

I just wish HP would give you a real copy of xp pro instead of their copy which has all the additional garbage on it. I guess too many people are burning these cd's now adays.

what about windows update? Does it suggest something, a new driver probably? If I were I would check the Bios version and look for a newer one. It's strange (even alarming) to experience problems with the processor
