Have a co worker who has one of these things and he was
talking to his daughter down under when all of a sudden
it went POOF and shut down. No power to the power
button, no nothing. Won't lite off pressing the button.

I'm thinking he fried a MB but not sure, haven't seen the
unit yet. Where to start ?

Thanks for any info, tips, etc..

If he plugs it in, does the ring of light not appear showing it's charging?

If it doesn't I'm thinking a fried motherboard too. (Happened to my Dad's Compaq)

From what I understand, nothing shows at all. He had a
loose dc jack inside due to a bump, but when he was
using it and it poofed, it was on battery power.

    I'm afraid it's in deep doo-doo.

Sorry, I didn't realize I posted this in the wrong sub forum.

Does he have pets? My friend's mother's laptop died. When I opened it up it probably had about a ziplock bag's worth of animal hair all over the motherboard. That could have shorted it.

I don't know. I just got it this morn. I'll open it up and see
what's in there. I'm going to be looking at all the cables
    for burn spots, etc..

Well I got the unit to lite off. The owner told me when it
went poof, he had it on his lap. The unit overheated and
BIOS detected this and shut the unit down. I have to go
into BIOS to get the dates set up, but it looks like it's
    a go.

Thanks for the tips and for just looking. As an old wise
guy once said. KISS. Keep it simple stupid. I was thinking
a MB. Sure glad it was only this. I have to replace the
DC jack as it's been bumped and is loose in the unit,
but other than that, it looks like it'll be squared away.

Yep, darn good idea. Will do. I still have some Shin Etsu G751
here at the house. Be perfect for this.
