Is there a way to modify the resolution in vista so that when a game runs in say 1024 x 768 it adds black borders as opposed to stretching it out?

I'm still trying to determine what resolutions i can run games at to get good performance and no stretching. Maybe it's a resolution I'm missing - i know 800x 600 is 4:3 as is 1024 x 768 (at least i believe it to be).
