I have a friend over this weekend who has a new HP dv9000 with Bluray DVD. We could get the picture on my big screen, but we couldn't figure out the sound. Anybody know how on this one. My XPS works fine with sound, but not the HP

I think the DV9000 has an HDMI 1.0 port which doesn't output sound amirite?

I always thought you could get sound with HDMI cable/ports, but on my XPS you have to right click on the speaker icon and go into properties and select the HDMI sound, but the HP doesn't have that? Just another speaker choice.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#HDMI_1.0

Go down to 1.3 and you'll see "Optionally supports output of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio streams for external decoding by AV receivers.[77] TrueHD and DTS-HD are lossless audio codec formats used on Blu-ray Discs and HD DVDs. If the disc player can decode these streams into uncompressed audio, then HDMI 1.3 is not necessary, as all versions of HDMI can transport uncompressed audio."

Essentially I think they're saying that it CAN send the audio, but it doesn't know how with 1.0-1.2 ports.

On most HP laptops, you have to switch the sound output from speakers to spdif or digital output. You just change digital to the default output. Normally there is an icon in the taskbar associated with the sound card functions where you can make the switch. If that is not there, you have to go through the control panel and sound option and set the default output device to digital. It varies depending on sound card. You can also install the latest sound driver and it should put the icon back in the taskbar making it easier to do the switch. Hope this helps

According to this thread it does http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=102160

You might want to give the thread referenced above a quick read about the Nvidia drivers, just in case you upgraded yours. P.S. I know it's an old thread but better than nothing, right?

Edit: Here is another thread for you to read on the HP forum about this issue with proposed solutions: http://tinyurl.com/6564s9
