First off, thank you guys for being generally very helpful. I just ordered an nc8430 in large part due to the discussions on this board.

I will be going off to law school in about a week and I am looking at purchasing a docking station for when I am in my room. I'll likely have an external hard drive, monitor, printer, and other peripherals.

What are the primary advantages of getting a docking station? How are the HP docking stations?

    Thanks a lot.

I guess it just makes your desk neater without cables running all over the place. It also encourages you to get a nice monitor. Do you need it? I say not.

They're advanced docking station includes a Multi-port II slot, might be a neater way to have a 2nd disk. The stand is also handy if you plan on using the system's screen, but want it on a raised platform.

HP does include an application that includes product information/demos for all the accessories that are offered for the system. The animations might help you decide if you want them.

I actually just ordered a docking station/stand (so I can use dual screens with the laptop centered vertically on the external monitor). I'll post the results, but it'll be a while due to ground shipping.

I just bought a Docking Station 1.1 for my new nc8430. I'm planning to connect to it my 19" LCD, a printer, mouse, network, logitech 2.1 sound system and a web camera. That way, everytime I need to get my notebook with me everything else stays connected on the desk. When I get back just "click" on a station and look... all is on it's place :)

I definately recommend docking stations for an environment like mine.
