My new DV9774CA likes to take forever to connect to the internet. It has the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN network adapter.
    This with Vista Home Premium.
I have reduced a lot of Performance features to keep the speed up, everything is also unchecked in MSCONFIG, except antivirus.

I am used to the XP boot time on my old DV8120CA laptop. But even with my new Vista laptop taking a tad bit longer to boot, it loads all the stuff by the clock quick enough, yet the network icon remains with a red X for ages. Even my antivirus pops up to try update at boot and can't, and for years it always got online was updated as soon as I booted. (I have turned auto update of for now).

Anyway to speed up the connecting on this? Or is this it? I often boot and go make a coffee whilst it does its thing. Its by far a long way from slow, the entire system is very fast and I am pleased with it otherwise. Seems everythings loaded and I can do stuff quickly like open aps and stuff, yet for a long time the network has the red X.

    thank you.

I noticed this to, when I move from like school to home and I take it out of sleep it can take a few min to connect. What i do is just open up the connect dialog, and then just hit refresh, and it will automatically connect to my network. Not the optimal way, but not really to hard to do either.

Usually when I boot my computer from totally off, then it connects instantly though.

Also, there's a tweak in the NBR Vista Tweaks thread about how to speed up network connection.

    Cheers!

This new laptop actually came with F.45 BIOS . HP drivers page for my model is still F.33.
I'll look up that Vista Tweak thread.
    Thanks.

Just looked at the tweak to make internet connect quicker and not for computers on a LAN, so I share files between this laptop and desktop via router, admitted not often. Maybe I'll try this tweak anyway, see what happens. I can always start the Workstation service again.

My HDX seems to connect to both the internet and LAN via WIFI long before
the status indicator changes from the red x to the globe.
Sometime 2 to 3 minutes before the status indicator changes. Or about 10 seconds after the desktop screen shows up, it connects without the RED X going away.

I was told this was to be fixed in Vista Sp1.

I see you are using XP but it may be the same problem

Have you checked the connection even with the indicator showing the X?

I said I'd try that tweak later and I have done so now, so it made no difference! So I turned Workstation service back on.

This is Vista Home Premium, not XP.

Tinman...I know what you mean about being able to use wifi even with the red X still on the icon. I have been able to do that the odd time. I think sometimes it takes a bit longer because I have been unable to open any webpages until the X vanishes, and other times I know it opened fine. plus my antivirus was trying to update as soon as the laptop booted and it was stuck waiting for a connection. I disabled the updating.
This red X stays on for about 30 seconds. I know its not the end of the world. Just trivial stuff.

I had rebooted several times trying stuff. I had pretty fast results one time after I shut off that Language Bar keyboard icon thats been on the taskbar since new last week.
I had right clickeed on that icon and could choose "Hidden" and now its gone. The next reboot I had wifi instantly. But the next couple reboots it was back to normal.

I have pretty much everything unchecked in msconfig, startup group last week.

Hopefull Vista SP1 will fix it then. I'll have to wait. Bigger fish to fry.

How do you get rid of the Bluetooth icon by the clock? In the settings its all unchecked, especially the one for "Show icon in notification area", yet it comes back every time. And in msconfig, startup tab the Bluetooth software is unchecked all week. Yet it still has the icon and whatever its doing.

    thank you.

Wow, The guy does not want to go away. Same thing here.
It looks like if you have have HP's wireless assistant running. This will attempt to turn on Bluetooth one last time. Even if you have turned it off everyplace else. It still turns it back om.

I had to go into wireless assistant and click on the turn off button next to bluetooth line. Then right click on the BT task bar icon and select remove icon.
It's gone and bluetooth is now shutoff. Now when I boot the computer the icon no longer shows up. Once I turned bT back on in the Wireless assistant. The Taskbar Icon came back.
